Career
Gary Owen spent six years as a Master at Arms in the United States Navy and was stationed in the Presidential Honor Guard prior to his success as a stand-up comedian. Owen was dubbed the "Funniest Serviceman in America" after a year of doing stand-up. He began doing stand-up in San Diego and built a large African-American fan base. He went on to win the "Funniest Black Comedian" competition in San Diego. That culminated in his first appearance at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. He auditioned for BET's Comic View in July 1997. His own one-hour Grandstand performance was rewarded by two appearances on the multicultural comedy showcase. He was chosen from the year's four "Grandstanders" to be the host at the end of the season. Owen was the first white man to ever host Comic View.
Owen "Black America's Favorite White Comic" was a line in April 2011. Owen has two stand-up DVDs: Breakin' Out The Park, which is now available worldwide, and Urban Legend. On Martin Lawrence Presents: 1st Amendment Stand-Up on Starz, he was also one of the headliners.
Owen appeared in the Screen Gems comedy Think Like a Man, based on Steve Harvey's book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, with Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union.
Owen has appeared in films including Rebound, College, Daddy Day Care, and Hillbilly Highway, as well as a regular presence on Tyler Perry's TBS show House of Payne as Zack. Larry appeared on "Meet the Blacks" as Larry. The Gary Owen Show on BET is his own show.
