Gary Lewis (born Gary Harold Lee Levitch; July 31, 1945) was an American singer who was the leader of Gary Lewis & the Playboys.
Early life
Gary Lewis is Jerry Lewis' uncle and Patti Palmer, the son of Jerry Lewis and Patti Palmer. His mother, who was attending the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra, wanted to name him after her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but a clerical mistake changed his son's name to "Gary." In 1960, he received a set of drums as a birthday present. Lewis formed the band "Gary and the Playboys" with four others when he was 18, and he performed with them. Joking about the lateness of bandmates to rehearsal, Lewis referred to them as "playboys" and the name stuck.
Lewis was the drummer, and Dave Walker was the singer and guitarist. Gary's mother was secretly funding the purchases of equipment as they suspected Gary's father would not be able to assist the band financially. The band was relatively anonymous without the Lewis cachet. Despite living down the street from Lewis's, producer Snuff Garrett was unaware of the band until a good friend, conductor Les Brown, warned him that the group was on Disneyland and that Garrett should give them a listen.
Lewis was drafted into the United States Army. He spent two months at the Saigon Airport during the Vietnam War and the remainder of the time in South Korea during his two years of service.
Later life
Lewis took a break from performing, running a music store in the San Fernando Valley, and teaching drumming lessons in 1971. Billy Cowsill of the Cowsills, who was briefly interested in starting Medecine, was not successful. Lewis began touring again in the 1980s, with various Playboy iterations, but generally without any other original members. Gary met his half-sister Suzan Klienman, who had found that they are related siblings, the children of comedy actor Jerry Lewis, on the nationally syndicated program Inside Edition. Lewis and his family live in Rush, New York.
