Gareth Paul Gates (born 12 July 1984) is an English singer-songwriter.

In the first series of the ITV talent show Pop Idol, he was the runner-up.

Gates has sold over 3.5 million units in the United Kingdom.

He is also known for his stuttering, and he has openly discussed his stuttering.

Gates migrated to musical theatre in 2009, where he now serves as a speech coach with the program.

Gates spent eighteen months as Marius, first in the touring production and then in Les Misérables, the West End version.

Eddie in legally Blonde appeared in 2012 and Dean in Boogie Nights the Musical in 2013.

He was a member of the pop group 5th Story, which was the catalyst for The Big Reunion.

Early life

Gates was born in West Bowling, Bradford, to Paul and Wendy (née Farry) Broadbent. Nicola (born 1985), Charlotte (born 1991), and Jessica (born 1993) and his cousin James (born 1986) who was fostered by his family. His parents continue to care for other children. Gates and his siblings attended Dixons City Technology College in West Bowling, Bradford, where Gates studied art and music at GCSE level.

At age nine, he joined Bradford Cathedral Choir. He was head chorister by the age of 11, performing solo for the Queen when she visited in 1997. Gates received a Grade 8 in piano, classical guitar, and singing. He became a Christian at Abundant Life Church in Bradford, where he performed his guitar. Before the finals of Pop Idol, he gained a reserve spot at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Personal life

Gates and his partner Suzanne Gates (née Mole) lived in Chiswick, West London, until their separation in 2012. The pair first met when she was a dancer at the Record of the Year awards in 2002, which Gates received for her song "Unchained Melody." The People newspaper mistakenly announced that they had secretly married in October 2006. However, Gates and Mole got engaged on New Year's Eve 2007 and were married on July 18, 2008 in a private gathering for family and friends. On April 6, 2009, the couple had a child together, a girl they named Missy.

Gates qualified as a speech coach and later as a course instructor with the McGuire Programme, where he supports those with stammers similar to his own. He co-led his first full course in February 2005 and then taught his first course in Galway, Ireland, solo. In November 2006, he was the second at Bournemouth. At the Palace of Westminster, Gates spoke to MPs including David Amess, Robert Buckland, and Steve Brine as part of a briefing on communication disabilities hosted by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Centre for Social Justice. "I hope to shed light on the topics that surround language and literacy difficulties by speaking today," Gates said. I want to explore how people's lives are shaped and moulded by their inability to converse and communicate effectively. It determines who they become and the paths they follow. At the Giving Voice Awards Ceremony on October 18, 2011, his work as an ambassador raised concerns regarding speech difficulties.

Gates and Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts, founded by Gates, together with Jonathan Wilkes, then-wife Suzanne and Wilkes' wife Nikki, in Bradford, Yorkshire, age 5 to 18. In Milton Keynes, Gates and Wilkes opened a second academy. Gates revealed plans to open a second academy in Leeds during a BBC Radio Leeds interview on June 16, 2012. Since the separation from his wife, Gates' marriage was broken down, but Gates now has three performing arts academies in Yorkshire.

Gates was the runner-up to Will Young on the first series of Pop Idol in February 2002. Gates performed with Flying Without Wings and was accepted into the next round of the competition. Despite losing the competition, Simon Cowell was signed by BMG shortly after.

"Unchained Melody," Gates' first single, a cover of "Unchained Melody," debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart. By ITV viewers, the single achieved double-platinum in the United Kingdom and was named 2002's The Year of the Year. "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)" was followed by another number-one single. Will Young, the third album by his third single, "Suspicious Minds"/"The Long and Winding Road," a duet with Pop Idol winner Will Young, has also risen to the top of the charts. "What My Heart Wants to Say" is his fourth book, which reached number five. What My Heart Wants to Say, Gates' debut album, reached first week sales of 100,000 copies, peaking at number two in the UK Albums Chart, and then receiving double platinum status in the United Kingdom.

The International Gareth Gates Day in Smash Hits magazine on October 7th, 2002. Gates performed "Spirit in the Sky" with The Kumars in 2003. For two weeks, the single was the best-one in the United Kingdom. He has also attended Comic Relief's Celebrity Driving School. He became involved with Body and Soul, a non-profit that supports people with HIV and AIDS, which is linked to Comic Relief.

"Sunshine," his third album Go Your Own Way, which was released in October 2003, reached number three. However, the album was much less commercial than his debut album. It ranked at number eleven in the United Kingdom before falling to No. 78. 32 were on the following week, and only four weeks on the album chart as a whole. The album received marginally more success in a number of Asian countries, but Gates received the MTV Asia award for Best International Male in 2003-04. MTV China and MTV Taiwan gave him the same award.

"Say it Isn't So" is Gates' fourth single release in the UK until April 2007. He began his career in the United Kingdom and Asia before taking a break and learning as a speech coach and course instructor with the McGuire Programme at the start of 2004.

Gates had sold only over three million music singles in the United Kingdom, including the second and sixth best selling singles in 2002 ("Unchained Melody"), which sold 51,000 copies), and "Spirit in the Sky," the second best selling single in 2003." These singles were among the Top 100 singles of the decade (2000-2009) as announced on Radio 1 with Spirit in the Sky at no. Anyone of Us (no. Melody, 56, and Unchained Melody (no. no.) 2). Gates were later pulled from the brand in April 2006, but before the introduction of any new stuff, they were discontinued.

Whether It Happened To Gareth Gates?, a television documentary that explored his time in the music industry and his life outside of it, was released in 2006. In December 2006, the documentary premiered a new recording contract with UMTV (part of Universal) and a new album as well as showing snippets of the new content. At a private gig on November 29, 2006, he gave a sneak peek at his forthcoming album. Gates has been writing for writers such as Sacha Skarbek (who has collaborated with James Blunt), Ricky Ross (of Deacon Blue), Gary Clark, and Pete Gordeno), and the album was produced by Martin Terefe, Jon Hall, and Nick Whitecross.

Since 2004, Gates had also been working with singer-songwriter Judie Tzuke. According to Lucie Silvas, the first contact was made via Lucie Silvas. Graham Kearns, Gates' regular acoustic guitarist, has worked with Tzuke and has writing credits with Gates on both albums. Gates performed backing vocals to a stunned audience on Tzuke's track "Bully" (from her album Secret Agent), appearing at the Limelight venue in Crewe during Tzuke's October 2004 tour. On Tzuke's 2007 album Songs 1, Gates co-wrote with Tzuke "Dark Days."

Gates appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross for the first time since his voice had been on display in a mainstream television chat show since his speech enhancements.

"Changes" was Gates' first single from their third album, and it was released on September 9, 2007. The single ranked at number 14 in the United Kingdom. "Angel on My Shoulder," a second single, debuted on June 18, 2007 and soared at number 22. For just one week, the singles remained in the UK Top 40 for just one week. Pictures of the Other Side, Gates' third album, was released on June 25, 2007. It was Gates' lowest selling album to date, with only two weeks on the UK album chart before falling to Number 23 the following week and then falling out of the chart entirely.

Gates appeared in the line-up for A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe, a charity effort to honor 25 years of musical theatre composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, on July 6, 2008. In a preview of a new musical Soho Cinders and features on the album, Gates appeared as Robbie.

Gates appeared on ITV1's Dancing on Ice with skating partner Maria Filippov, finishing fourth, losing a spot in the final to Zaraah Abrahams and dancing partner Fred Palascak.

Gates co-wrote the song "Christmas and I'm Home" with her while she was on her way to Judie Tzuke. It was first premiered live by Gates in Bradford in 2004, and Tzuke's pianist Haim Cotton performed the song live. Tzuke's version was first released in November 2008 as a charity single download and as a physical CD single sold solely through the CD Baby website.

Gates appeared in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Adelphi Theatre, London, in 2009. Gates took over Lee Mead's role on February 7, 2009, and continued to perform the part until the final performance on May 29, 2009.

On October 4, 2009, Gates performed "Why God, Why?" at the Drury Lane Theatre as part of the charity event "Broadway to West End by Special Arrangement." As a duet with Ima Castro, he performed as a solo and "The Last Night of the World." Both songs were performed by Miss Saigon, who died during the musical Miss Saigon. The purpose was to recognize orchestrator William Brohm's service while also raising funds for CLIC Sargent Cancer care.

Gates was confirmed in June 2009 that he would be in the role of Marius in the International 25th Anniversary World Tour production. Gates had the opportunity to perform Marius in London's West End or as part of the anniversary tour, but the tour was canceled because it was a new production and there was the opportunity to make the role his own. Les Misérables Live, a live cast recording, was shot in Manchester and released as a double album on First Night Records in September 2010.

Gates, along with his then wife Suzanne, mother Wendy, sister Nicola, and best friend Matt, won £30,000 for the Bobby Moore Fund for bowel cancer in December 2009. An appearance on Sky's Don't Forget the Lyrics was one of other television and sporting events for charity. Mr. and Mrs. Moore of ITV's For the Bobby Moore Fund and other Rhys Daniels Trust activities, Mr. and Mrs.

Following the final performance of the anniversary tour at The Barbican, London, in October 2010, Gates appeared in Les Misérables at Queen's Theatre, where he continued to perform Marius until June 2011.

Gates took a break from musical theatre to work on other projects, including writing a new album, but the musical would not return in March 2012, as attempts to recover the tour following the company's bankruptcy.

Gates appeared in a one-night only charity production of Children of Eden in January 2012 as part of Cain/Japeth in aid of Crohn's disease.

Stop My Stutter, a documentary that was broadcast on BBC Three in February 2012, was a mustache. Gates consulted with five young men and women who haven't stammered since childhood in the documentary. "I hope this documentary will give people an insight into something that most people take for granted – speaking!"

Rather, Gates appeared in the new musical Loserville at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2012. Busted's James Bourne and Elliot Davis wrote the musical. The cast also included EastEnders Aaron Sidwell and Lil' Chris, as well as Gates.

Gates took over Warner's role as a Warner in the musical Legally Blonde's UK tour in July 2012.

He appeared in the musical Boogie Nights in early 2013 with members of The Osmonds, Louise Lytton, Shane Ritchie, Chico, and Andy Abraham.

Gates, Dane Bowers (from Another Level), Kenzie (from Blazin' Squad), Adam Rickitt (from Blazin' Squad), and Kavana were all expected to form a "supergroup" for the ITV2's "The Big Reunion" on December 27th. Following the schedule, the newly formed group toured in October 2014 as part of the Big Reunion Boyband Tour.

Gates appeared in Dancing on Ice for the final series in January 2014, this time with Brianne Delcourt. This year's festival featured former series champions and public favorites. He finished in 7th place and went on to appear in the very last Dancing on Ice tour in March and April 2014.

In March 2014, Sony Music released The Very Best of Gareth Gates, a compilation album. It includes hits from his first two albums and two other songs from his debut album (all of which are owned by Sony Music), as well as three brand new acoustic tracks he produced with his guitarist Pete Rinaldi. The album didn't chart.

In 2016, Gates appeared as Willard in a national tour of Footloose. During his absences, he took many breaks during the tour, and Lee Brennan performed his part during his absences.

During spring 2017, Gates appeared in Robin Hood Easter Panto at several locations around the country.

In June 2022, Gates hosted the Big 80s Festival in Bradford, to mark the Queen's seventh year on the throne. "I speak to people in Bradford," Gates said. They often have to go to a new place to see a major performance. If that's over to Manchester, Leeds, or even Birmingham, Birmingham will be a buzz. We're attempting to do something here in Bradford, where we're now their go-to-events company to see world class performers. Our main goal is to make sure the people of Bradford don't have to fly and that they can enjoy all of these shows on their doorstep."
