Gareth David Lloyd (born 28 March 1981), also known as Gareth David-Lloyd, is a Welsh actor best known for his role in Torchwood's British science fiction series.
Early life
He was born in Betws, Newport. In a junior school play, David-Lloyd's first acting role was as a robot. As an adolescent, he attended the Gwent Young People's Theatre in Abergavenny and the Dolman Youth Theatre in Newport. He appeared in several plays, including Macbeth, The Threepenny Opera, and Henry V, in which he appeared in the title role. Gareth studied at Crosskeys College in South Wales, majoring in Performing Arts. When former Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock saw the young David-Lloyd performing at Monmouth Castle, he gave him £250 to use towards his acting career.
Personal life
In 2010, David-Lloyd married Gemma James. Lily and Eli are the couple's daughter and son. According to Gareth's Twitter, "he/him and they/them" pronouns are used.
Career
David-Lloyd leads the progressive metal band Blue Gillespie, formerly known as A Breath of Blue Fire. On April 20, 2008, the band appeared in Sex, Wales, and Anarchy, as well as Orgee on May 3, 2008. The University of Wales Institute Cardiff also has an Orgee. Cave Country, the company's first EP, was released in December 2008 and was followed by Cave Country Part 2 which was released in August 2009. Synesthesia, the band's debut album, was released in May 2010. In May 2012, they released their second album, Seven Rages of Man.
David-Lloyd appeared in several local stage performances at the Dolman Theatre in Newport and the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff while attending Coleg Gwent, Crosskeys. David-Lloyd continued to train at the National Youth Theatre before moving to Reading to pursue his acting career with The Rep. Sebastian appeared in Twelfth Night on stage, as well as David-Lloyd.
He played Yanto Jones in the 2004 comedy/drama Mine All Mine, written by Torchwood creator Russell T Davies. David-Lloyd began at the Open University in 2005 as a part-time scholar in philosophy and psychology.
David-Lloyd returned to Wales for the filming of his first television role in 2006 for Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, in which he played Ianto Jones, a member of the fictional Torchwood Institute. David-Lloyd appeared in three of four Torchwood films, as well as "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's Conclusion" in the Doctor Who series 4 finale episodes. David-Lloyd has written The Sin Eaters, a Torchwood audio book, and appeared in the Torchwood audio dramas Lost Souls, Asylum, Golden Age, The Dead Line, and The House of the Dead. David-Lloyd appeared in an episode of the long-running ITV series The Bill premiered on January 21, 2010 and appeared as Dr. John Watson in The Asylum's 2010 direct-to-DVD film Sherlock Holmes. He also appeared in the pantomime Cinderella at the Charter Theatre Preston, portraying Prince Charming.
David-Lloyd appeared in Casimir Effect, an independent short film starring Dr. Robert Cameron. This film debuted in early 2010 and was released on December 12, 2011. This is a demonstration of concept, according to the production company, and the Casimir Effect will be turned into a TV series.
Gareth appeared in the Syfy film Red Faction: Origins based on the video games in June 2011. David-Lloyd appeared in a season 3 of the SyFy show Warehouse 13 as an agent of Warehouse 12 in the 1890s, working with H. G. Wells later this year.
