Gabriel Jesus Career

Club career

Jesus signed a youth deal with Palmeiras on July 1, 2013. During the year, he was also the club's top goalscorer, scoring 54 goals in 48 matches.

Jesus signed a three-year contract with an additional two in January 2014, extending his salary from R$15,000 to four times as much as much in the fifth year; the charge to buy him out of his contract soared tenfold to R$30 million. However, the agreement changed the balance of his economic rights from 75% in favour of Palmeiras to 70% in favour of his agents.

In the 2014 version of the state under-17 championship, Jesus scored 37 goals in 22 games for Palmeiras, resulting in offers from clubs around the region and abroad. He was first named in Palmeiras' squad for a senior match on August 27, 2014, but the team lost 0–1 at home to Clube Atlético Mineiro in the first leg of this year's Copa do Brasil's first leg. He made no senior appearances during the campaign as his team was seriously endangered with relegation; this action, taken by Ricardo Gareca and Dorival Jnior, was widely condemned by supporters, who called for a change for the youngster by a petition.

In the 73rd minute of a 1–0 victory over CA Bragantino at Allianz Parque, Jesus made his senior debut in the season's Campeonato Paulista, replacing Leandro Pereira. The Verdo lost on a penalty shootout in the final against Santos on Saturday, and he made eight appearances, all off the bench.

Jesus made his first appearance in the second leg of the year's cup on April 29th, a 1–1 draw at Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube (6–2 aggregate). He made his first appearance in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A on May 9th, starting in a 2–2 home draw against Atlético Mineiro on the first day of the season on May 9th.

Jesus' first professional goal came in the next round of the cup, away from Agremiaço Sportiva Araguense on July 15, the only goal of the two-legged tie. Palmeiras defeated Cruzeiro Esporte Clube (4–3 aggregate) in the Estádio Governador Magalhé Pinto's two first-half strikes on August 26th, putting them into the quarter-finals. He scored his first two league goals, starting and winning by 3–2 over Joinville Esporte Clube on Thursday; the first goal came after 52 seconds.

Jesus finished the year with four goals from 20 games and his team defeated Santos to win the cup; he was also a starter in both legs of the finals but was forced to leave early due to a shoulder injury. He was named the league's Best Newcomer.

In the second game of the season, Jesus scored his first Paulista goal, setting a 2–2 home draw with Esporte Clube So Bento. He scored his first goal in continental football, a 2–2 draw away from Uruguay's River Plate in the first game of the year's Copa Libertadores' group stage, after being on a parody for compatriot Erik Lima at the interval. On a 3–3 draw, Away to Rosario Central scored twice in a 3–3 draw, but he was suspended for the first time in his career for his fight with Damián Musto; he later apologised for his infraction.

Jesus scored twice in the second half of a 4–0 victory at home to Clube Atlético Paranaense on May 14th. As the team won their first national championship since 1994, he scored 12 goals, and was named Bola de Ouro for player of the season.

It was announced on August 3rd, that Jesus would sign for Premier League club Manchester City in January 2017 on a pact until 2021. More add-ons were estimated to cost £27 million/€33 million. The transfer was completed on January 19, 2017.

In a 2–2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the City of Manchester Stadium, Jesus made his first Premier League appearance on January 21 as an 82nd-minute replacement for Raheem Sterling. In a 3–0 FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace a week later, Jesus made his first appearance in Manchester City's starting XI, assisting a goal for Sterling. Kevin De Bruyne was assisted in the 17th minute and then scored his first goal for the club in the 39th minute in his first Premier League start. He became the first Manchester City player to have a goal and an assist in their first Premier League appearance, as well as the third City player to have played in two or more goals in their first Premier League debut. Jesus suffered a metatarsal in his right foot in his third game (third league start) and was predicted to miss the remainder of the 2016-17 Premier League season. However, he returned to the Manchester Derby in April, serving as a substitute in a goalless draw. Jesus scored seven goals and four assists in 11 games during the 2016-2017 season.

In a 2–1 away win over Bournemouth on August 26, he scored his first Premier League goal of the 2017-18 season, as an equalizer in a 2–1 victory over Liverpool on September 9th. He suffered from a knee medial ligament injury on New Year's Eve, and after breaking his duck in the Champions League loss to FC Basel, he confessed that fear of being injured was affecting his game. In the 94th minute, Jesus scored his last Premier League goal in the 2017-18 season against Southampton, securing City a league record 100 points. Jesus signed a contract extension with Manchester City on August 3rd, extending his contract until 2023. Gabriel Jesus scored four goals against Burton Albion in a 9–0 victory on January 9, 2019.

Jesus scored once after coming on for Sergio Agüero in the 7–0 (10–2 aggregate) UEFA Champions League Round of 16 victories over Schalke 04 on March 13, 2019, and in doing so, the club tied for the highest winning margin in the knockout phase of the tournament. In a 2–1 victory over Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League against the Coronavirus epidemic, played behind closed doors following the Coronavirus outbreak on August 7th. Both goals were scored after Jesus' pressing prompted two errors from Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, securing Manchester City's place in the quarter finals. He was the only player to score in two separate games against Real Madrid in the 2019-2020 football season, having also scored in the first leg in Madrid. He scored 14 goals in just 22 Champions League games, a record broken by only three non-European players.

Jesus scored four goals in a 5–1 home win over Watford on April 23, his first Premier League hat-trick.

Jesus signed a long-term deal with Arsenal on July 4, 2022, and was given the number 9 shirt. The fee and the term of the employment were undisclosed, but it was announced that the Brazilian signed a five-year contract on a £45 million contract. In a 2–0 away victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on August 5, he made his club debut in a 2–0 victory. In his second match and first at the Emirates, he scored his first and second competitive goals against Leicester City on August 13th, as well as two assists.

In 2016, he was chosen in Dunga's provisional 40-man team for the Copa América Centenario in the United States, and was considered a substitute for the injured Douglas Costa in the final pick, but he was turned down due to a lack of a US visa. He was one of five forwards named in the squad for the team's hosting of the Olympic tournament later this year. In their last group game against Denmark, an eventual 4–0 victory, he scored once against Danish keeper Jeppe Hjbjerg, and he led to two more in a 6–0 victory. ISAAN KHAN IN MUNICH: Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, as Joshua Kimmich's second-half header handed the German giants a 3-2 win on aggregate at the Allianz Arena. Bayern, who conceded the Bundesliga crown to Bayer Leverkusen this weekend after winning 11 consecutive top flight titles, kept hopes of major silverware alive as they booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals alongside fellow German outfit Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal fought hard after falling behind in the 63rd minute but struggled to produce any clear cut chances, as Mikel Arteta threw on the likes of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in pursuit of an equaliser.

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 6, 2024
