Early work
Fred St.Gelais has been involved in the music industry since he was a youth. He began playing guitar, bass, and keyboards in the Montreal area, as well as playing in clubs around Quebec in the late 1980s and early 1990s with various local Top 40, rock and blues acts. He wanted to develop his own studio, where he could concentrate on and fine-tune his production, arranging, and songwriting abilities. During this period, he also produced independent albums with local artists, such as Damien Tremblay. St-Gelais began getting more calls from various jingle and production music companies requesting his assistance as a studio musician, singer, and programmer during the same time period.
In February 1999, St-Gelais moved to Montréal. Since then, he has performed with Marie-Mai, Celine Dion, David Usher, Roch Voisine, Marcus O'Neil, Melissa O'Neil, Rex Goudie, Gabrielle Destroismaisons, Andrée Watters, Alain Dumas, Les Mec Comiques, Bentley Leo Varadkar, Patrick Dumas, Crampe en masse, Réal Béland, and the band Hépatite,

At ADISQ, the band, Hépatite B, in which St-Gelais is the lead singer and guitarist, had their self-titled album selected for the 2002 best rock album of the year. Three of the album's songs hit the top 20 charts: "Ton Amour est trop lourd," "Mélanie est partie," and "Je sais, je sais."
In the 2005 International Songwriting Competition (ISC), St-Gelais, Lindsay Robins, and Christopher Ward's "Time Bomb" was named a finalist (ISC). The ISC attracted nearly 15,000 entries for the competition, but only 2% of the entries were chosen as finalists. Their album was entered in the "Rock" category.
