Early life
Frederick William Schneider III was born in Newark, New Jersey, on July 1, 1951, and died in Oceanport, New Jersey, New Jersey, after being relocated from Belleville, New Jersey. He has said that his musical influences included "Halloween songs and nutty Christmas songs" as well as "Motown." He attended the University of Georgia, where he wrote a book of poetry for a class project after graduating from Shore Regional High School. He served as both a janitor and a Meals on Wheels driver in college. He had no musical experience when the B-52s were born.

On Howard Stern's radio broadcast on February 22, 2010, Schneider spoke with him about being out to his mother as gay. His father knew more about her son than he did, and he said he came out of the closet while vacuum-cleaning. His mother replied with "I know, Freddie" and continued vacuuming without missing a beat. Schneider's reaction was "It's like, oh, OK." I'd say it'll be back outside and smoke some pot."
Schneider has been a lifelong vegetarian, and he was featured in a PETA commercial campaign discourageing people from eating lobsters.
