Frankie Russel Faison (born June 10, 1949), also known as Frankie R. Faison, is an American actor known for his role as Deputy Commissioner Ervin Burrell in the HBO series The Wire and as Barney Matthews in the Hannibal Lecter franchise.

Early life and education

Faison was born in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Carmena (née Gantt) and Edgar Faison. He studied drama at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, where he joined Theta Chi fraternity. He went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1974.

Career

Faison began his acting career in 1974 in the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of King Lear, with James Earl Jones in the title role. Faison was later seen alongside Jones in the Broadway premiere of Fences, for which he was recognized for the Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 1979's short-lived series Hot Hero Sandwich, Faison's next appearance appeared on television. When Faison appeared on Permanent Vacation as "Man in Lobby," he didn't make it to the big screen until 1980. After 1986, when he appeared in Lt. Fisk in Manhunter, a string of small roles was followed. He appeared in The Money Pit as an unruly building worker and in Stephen King's film Maximum Overdrive. He appeared alongside Eddie Murphy and James Earl Jones in Coming to America as a landlord and he received a small role in 1989 Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing. Detective Ron Lewis appeared in 1996's The Rich Man's Wife as Detective Ron Lewis. He appeared in the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair as Detective Paretti. Faison is best known for his appearances in Thomas Harris' Hannibal books: he appears alongside Manhunter in The Silence of the Lambs, the sequel to Hannibal, and the prequel Red Dragon.

He appeared in the Fox situation comedy True Colors starring Stephanie Faracy and Nancy Walker about an interracial couple during the 1990-1991 season. For the second season of the program, Cleavon Little was promoted by him. In 1991, Faison appeared alongside Hopkins in the film Freejack, which also starred Mick Jagger and Maximum Overdrive co-star Emilio Estevez. In 1998, he appeared on the science-fiction TV show Prey as a regular. He appeared in the Cheryl West drama in 1992 before It Hits Home. Faison played Jim Lewis, a slave who shares his religious conviction and awe with CSA General Thomas J. As the general's personal cook, "Stonewall" Jackson plays "Stonewall." He appeared in The Cookout in 2004 and appeared in White Chicks. On the HBO drama The Wire, Faison appeared as Baltimore City Police Commissioner Ervin Burrell.

Faison appeared in Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, a film about a single mother who moves her family to Georgia for her father's funeral—a man she never knew. Her clan is welcomed to the Brown family's crass, fun-loving family. Faison played the role of Brown and Vera's brother, L.B. Brown is a brown guy. In 2009, he appeared in John Krasinski's adaptation of Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, playing the son of a toilet attendant who adamantly recounts his father's experiences in one of the titular monologues.

On One Life to Live from 2009 to 2012, Faison appeared as Richard Evans.

He appeared in episodes of Blue Bloods, which also stars Tom Selleck, as an assistant police commissioner. Harlan was his main film role in this period, appearing in the film Adam. He appeared in a third-season episode of Lie to Me.
