Broadcasting career
Mitchell began his broadcasting career at the age of 17 at Dundalk's pirate radio station Carousel. Before joining Ulster Television in 1987 as a continuity announcer and newsreader, he spent time as a BBC radio producer on Walter Love show Day by Day and hosted the early morning weekday show and Saturday lunchtime shows on Downtown Radio. He has appeared on a variety of popular television shows, including UTV Life, School Around the Corner, End to the End, and Ultimate Ulster. His U105 Radio phone-in has risen to be one of Ireland's most popular topics, with his sharp questions and equal wit.
Mitchell remained on the announcing staff until 1993, when he became the station's chief weather presenter and news programme features reporter.
Mitchell also co-hosted and reported for End to End, a UTV debate series that aired between 2001 and 2004. Mitchell created School Around the Corner from 1996 to 2005, Ultimate Ulster from 2007 to 2009, and UTV Life from 1999 to 2009. His Ultimate Ulster campaign, which featured a lineup of top tens in the locality, was the most closely watched regional program in the United Kingdom. He is well-known as the weatherman on television, with crazy weather, meteorological watches, and a charming presentation style. When UTV Media PLC (Now 'Wireless Group PLC') sold on their television shares late in 2016, he began using new ITV graphics on the new look UTV Live's new look.
Mitchell is the host of the popular radio mid morning phone call on the highly successful U105 Radio Station, which also broadcasts the former home of UTV, Havelock House. At 2nd Street in Belfast's Titanic Quarter district, it is now located on its own designated floor. Since September 2006, he has been on U105 in the 9am–12 p.m. slot.
Frank has resigned from Weather Presenting on UTV and has officially left the newly-revamped ITV division at the end of March 2021. However, he has confirmed that he will continue to host the U105 Radio Phone In every morning from Monday to Friday.
