Frank Chamizo Marquez (born 10 July 1992) is a naturalized Italian two-time world freestyle wrestling champion.

He has won five world and Olympic medals, all in all.

Personal life

Chamizo had a trying childhood. He grew up in poverty and was raised by his grandmother because both of his parents lived in another country. He started wrestling at the age of seven after stepping into a wrestling facility out of envy. The Cuban government eventually understood his ability and helped him enroll in a secondary school where he could continue wrestling. Chamizo is fluent in Italian and can also speak in English in addition to his native Spanish.

Career in Cuba

Chamizo won a world bronze medal for Cuba in 2010; he was only 18 years old at the time. He returned to the world championships this year, placing 12th in 12th. However, Cuba's wrestling federation banned him for two years for reportedly having problems with weight control after the 2011 World Wrestling Championships. He went to Italy, where his ex-wife is from. He was at a crossroads in life.

Career in Italy

Chamizo made his international debut for Italy in 2015 and received a gold medal. No Italian had won a world or Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medal since 1980.

Chamizo went on to win three more world-level medals, including a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 2017 world championship.

Overall, Chamizo has earned four world-level medals for Italy and two world-level championships.
