Francisca Valenzuela (American Spanish): [freanskela]; born March 17, 1987 in San Francisco, California) is an American-born Chilean singer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist. Valenzuela was born and raised in San Francisco, California, where she lived until the age of 12, before heading to Santiago, Chile. Following the release of her debut album, Muérdete La Lenna, in June 2007, she gained traction in Chile and Latin America. Buen Soldado, her second album, followed in March 2011. In Chile, Valenzuela has earned both gold and platinum albums.

Early life

Francisca Valenzuela was born in San Francisco, California, to Chilean-born scientists Pablo Valenzuela Valdés and Bernardita Méndez Velasco. She is the fourth oldest and youngest daughter of five children. Valenzuela attended Park Day School in Oakland, California. Valenzuela began taking music lessons at the age of 7. By the age of ten, she was playing acoustic guitar and pursuing classical piano. She and her brothers will fly to Santiago, where they will visit relatives during summer vacations and Christmas. When she was 12, the family would eventually move to Santiago, Chile. Valenzuela was enrolled in Saint George's College, an elite private school in Santiago's Vitacura neighborhood.

Valenzuela's parents assisted her in submitting poetry of her own composition to numerous literary journals and summer poetry classes, as well as teaching summer poetry. Many of her poems were published in El Andar, a Latin American literary magazine. She released her first book, Defenseless Waters, in 2000, which included a collection of her poems and illustrations. Isabel Allende, a well-known Chilean author, was featured in the book. In 2001, she published Abejorros/Madurar, her second book, which was also published in Spain and Latin America. She performed songs of her own composition and poetry readings in northern California as part of a defenseless Waters promotional tour. Valenzuela is a natural speaker in English and Spanish, and she writes in both languages often.

Personal life

Valenzuela completed a summer course in International Relations at the University of California, Berkeley. She studied journalism at Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile, later. She put her studies on hold and later decided to pursue full time due to a tumultuous touring and pre-production schedule for her second album. She is currently in a relationship with Chilean producer Vicente Sanfuentes as of January 2016. She lives in Los Angeles, California.

Music career

Francisca and her family moved to Santiago, Chile, shortly after the publication of her first book. Francisca performed her original songs while living in Chile. She studied intensive jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2004. She began searching for a record by delivering her demos to major record label companies around Chile, with no success. She performed English-language songs in bars and clubs in Santiago, but she eventually started writing and performing in Spanish. Valenzuela decided to release her music in Chile after many failed attempts to sign with a major label.

Valenzuela's first solo single, "Peces," was released in 2006 by Valenzuela, who wrote about a boy she adored who did not express her feelings at age 13. "Peces" gained traction on Chilean radio just a few months after it was announced. Rolling Stone magazine in Chile named "Peces" as one of the year's best 100 songs. Valenzuela's debut album in Santiago came after the success of her first unofficial single. The album was produced by brothers Mauricio and Francisco Durán of Los Bunkers. "Dulce," her second single, which debuted on Chile's national charts, debuted in December 2006.

Julieta Venegas invited her to open her concert at Teatro Caupolicán on May 19, 2007, to bring more accomplishments to her short musical career. Muérdete La Lenna's debut album, released in Chile, on June 30, 2007. "She is the Princess of Rock," the Chilean press quickly dubbed her as the "new musical revelation." The album was named Gold in Chile shortly after its introduction. Valenzuela debuted at the annual LAMC conference in New York City in July 2008. This was Valenzuela's first musical appearance in the United States, as well as a chance to perform her music outside of Latin America. Valenzuela performed at various venues around Chile, as well as Mexico, Argentina, and other Latin American nations.

Valenzuela's second album, both in Santiago and Berlin, began in early 2009. She contributed to the Chilean water conservation film H2O:Cero by writing a new song called "En Blanco" for the film. Violeta Parra's album tribute included recording a new version of "Run Run Se Fue Pa'l Norte" as well as recording a version of Inti-Illimani's "Vuelvo."

Valenzuela co-wrote and performed two songs, "Help Me" and "Someday" in 2009, and she collaborated with Chilean rapper Latin Bitman on his album Colour; she produced and performed two songs, "Help Me" and "Someday." In December 2009, "Help Me" became a single in the United States and Chile, and a music video was also shot in Los Angeles. Valenzuela's second studio album, which was released in Santiago, was released in August 2010. In late 2010, the album's manufacturing process was complete. Valenzuela's first single "Quiereo Verte Más" from her second studio album Buen Soldado was released in Chile on January 1, 2011 as a physical and digital download. Valenzuela performed Buen Soldado internationally at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2012. She appeared at Midem in Cannes, France, representing Chile. Valenzuela had appeared at the festival in 2011.

Valenzuela is a featured artist on Spanish singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz's tribute album, Y Si Fueran Ellas. Lola Soledad, a Sanz girl, was covered on the album. Thal'a and Ana Torroja are among thirteen female vocalists on the album, including Thalanda and Ana Torroja. On November 19, 2013, the album was released on iTunes globally.

Valenzuela revealed in May 2014 that Tajo Abierto, her third studio album, would be released in September 2014. On July 15, 2014, the album's first official single, "Prenderemos fuego al cielo," was released as a digital download on iTunes. Valenzuela recorded the majority of the album on piano before learning how to create the final studio version using special computer software. In November 2013, she began recording her third studio album, which was finished in May 2014. The bulk of the album was recorded in Los Angeles, California, with the exception of one song, "Cuequita del corazón," which Valenzuela recorded in Santiago, Chile, Estudios del Sur. Valenzuela was co-produced on her second album, Jesse Rogg, Vicente Sanfuentes (who co-produced her second album), and ureo Baqueiro. Valenzuela made 25 songs for the album and picked 11 for the final track listing.

Valenzuela formed Frantastic Records in 2014 with the support of her mother, Vicente Sanfuentes, and a small staff in Chile. On September 9, 2014, Tajo Abierto was released around the world on iTunes. She appeared in Spain, Mexico, and Chile in September and November 2014 to support the album. She returned to the United States, where she debuted at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 1, 2014. She appeared in Los Angeles and Oakland, California, while living in the United States. On December 11, 2014, Armadura" was announced as the album's second single and was released for digital download. By iTunes Chile, Tajo Abierto was rated as one of the best albums of 2014.

Valenzuela travelled to Manaus and Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Amazonian Jungle, to produce and film a music video for the HBO Latin America tourism series "Encuentros en Brasil" in 2014. In English, she wrote "Reina tropical de Brasil" ("Tropical Queen of Brazil" ("Tropical Queen of Brazil." In September 2014, the documentary series premiered in Latin America and the Caribbean. On July 14, 2014, a collection of songs from the documentary was released on iTunes.

Valenzuela was selected alongside 23 other well-known international artists to record "Live It" for the 24th annual World Men's Handball Championship in late December 2014. On January 15, 2015, she and the other artists appeared at the opening ceremony in Doha, Qatar.

In 2018, she released the first two singles from her forthcoming fourth studio album, "Tómame" and "Ya no se trata de ti," both of whom appeared on the Chile Singles Chart, peaking on the positions 15 and 39, respectively. She launched "Héroe," the album's third single, and the country's fifth top ten. During the handover segment of the forthcoming Games in her hometown Santiago, she performed the song at the closing ceremony of the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Valenzuela's fourth studio album, La Fortaleza, was released on January 17, 2020. A week before launching "Flotando," the album's fourth single, she reached the top of the Chile Singles Chart.

Fashion career

Valenzuela began modelling for the famous Chilean clothing brand "Foster" in 2012. She joined the company in May 2013 to create a line. Her collection includes black and white pieces inspired by 60s mod and SKA. The collection is exclusive to Foster stores around Chile. Valenzuela unveiled her second collection for Foster on November 6, 2013. The Summer 2014 collection includes 21 pieces, including handbags and wallets made by Valenzuela.
