Francis Reyes Life

Francis Florentino Reyes (born in Lipa City, Philippines), a Filipino singer, is born on June 20, 1967.

He is best known for his role as the guitarist for The Dawn, a Filipino rock band.

He was the chief radio announcer and musical director of the rock station NU107.5 FM, which uses the on-air stage name Francis Brew.

Billboard Philippines, the founder, was also the editor, which was also launched in 2016.

Early years

Reyes was born and raised in Lipa City, the second child of Florante Luz Reyes, a photographer, and Teresita Marquinez Saludo, a housewife. His youth was not particularly musical, and his on-stage experiences were mainly concentrated on oratorical competitions, which he regularly won. He started playing guitar at 14 years old, aided by his older brother Ferdinand, who was a "natural" guitarist. The Reyeses were not wealthy, and his first proper guitar, a fake Gibson acoustic worth Php150.00, was promised as a gift if he won a declamation competition during his junior high school years in De La Salle Lipa.

Although his mother encouraged Reyes' decision to study music or fine arts in university, the family was not encouraged by his family, so he majored in Political Science and minored in Literature at De La Salle University. Nonetheless, he continued to study music on his own, including an old Telecaster copy from an uncle in Canada, to school and practicing outside the university library. He formed a few bands with pals and performed at school functions. The school's prohibitive tuition fees, as well as the family's fragile financial situation, all took their toll, and he began looking for writing jobs to supplement his income. He auditioned for an FM radio station and became a graveyard shift worker in 1987, but was unable to join NU107 until 2005.

Francis Reyes Career

Career

He became a member of Afterimage, which was then headed by Martin Galan, who also managed the Dawn, around the same time. When Reyes joined the Dawn, he was juggling school, NU107, and the band. He became somewhat late with the radio station and was allowed to leave amicably in 1992. He returned to host "In the Raw" in 1997 and has been with the station since then. He later served as NU107's chief announcer and musical director until the final broadcast of November 7, 2010.

During his time with Afterimage, Reyes met the Dawn, though he had already heard Jett Pangan in college during interpretative reading competitions that Pangan frequently won. He became acquainted with the group's guitarist/founder Teddy Diaz, and they even discussed the possibility of collaborating on a thrash metal team with drummer JB Leonor's brother Dennis. Teddy was killed just days after they began talking, unfortunately. Reyes was then asked to be one of the three guitarists to appear in Teddy's role in the Folk Arts Theater's "Salamat Teddy" tribute performance in September 1988.

During Atsushi Matsuura's tenure with the Dawn, Reyes returned to Afterimage, becoming one of the band's roadies. He was asked to replace Matsuura in November 1989.

Reyes released three albums and appeared with the Dawn until 1995, when the band decided to go on hiatus. Lou Bonnevie, Kulay, P.O.T., and Joey Ayala played between 1985 and 1989 until the band reformed. He attributes his experience with The Dawn and their eclectic music for his ability to perform in various genres.

The Dawn was founded in 1999 with Atsushi Matsuura, effectively expanding the line-up to a five-piece. Reyes became the sole guitarist after Matsuura parted ways with the band in 2004.

After a "hard meeting," Francis left the band on April 16, 2009, Jett Pangan described as a "hard meeting." Pangan returned to state, but Reyes is welcome to rejoin the band.

Reyes and bassist Carlos Balcells returned to the band on June 7, 2016, making the band a quintet once more.

Reyes is also a Roadrunner Network contractual music arranger. He made a piece for Mga Gitarista, which was released by 12Stone Records. Despite being urged by peers to record a guitar-oriented solo album, Reyes is not keen on making a solo album and preferring to concentrate on the Dawn.

Garlic formed the experimental quartet Garlic with Razorback bassist Louie Talan and Imago drummer Zach Lucero (also an NU107 alumnus). Although the group received some coveted accolades, they have yet to record an album.

He was a member of Helenovela, with former Orange and Lemons frontman Mcoy Fundales now with KENYO and PESO Movement Japs Sergio (ex-Rivermaya), drummer Kurt Floresca, and former Jet Pangan Group bassist Macky Macaventa who is now with True Faith.

Reyes was also a member of Project 1: The supergroup.

Reyes became Billboard Philippines' editor-in-chief in 2016, a brand dedicated to music news, charts, and other related services. In January 2018, he eventually phased it out.
