Francis Coquelin Career

Club career

Coquelin was born in Laval, Mayenne, from parents who came from Réunion France. He began playing for AS Bourny Laval before leaving in 2005 for the capital's biggest club, Stade Lavallois. Coquelin spent three years at the club before being spotted by renowned Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi while on international service, competing in a 2008 UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round qualification match against Israel.

Following a fruitful trial with Arsenal, Coquelin joined Arsenal from Stade Lavallois on July 22, 2008. Despite suffering a thigh injury that cut the trial short, Coquelin was able to proceed and was then given a contract to remain in North London.

In 2008, Coquelin made his debut in Arsenal's pre-season matches against Barnet and Szombadás, his first appearance in the summer of 2008, when the team was relegated to play at right back. In a reserve match against Stoke City on October 6, Coquelin scored his first goal in an Arsenal shirt, shooting with his weaker left foot extending from the edge of the box.

During the 2009–2010 season, he was a regular for Arsenal's reserves, playing 12 times and scoring twice. He made his first appearance for the first team against West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup third round on September 22, 2009, playing 58 minutes before being replaced by Mark Randall. In the 2–1 victory over Liverpool, he appeared in the League Cup for the second time, this time as a second-half replacement for Fran Mérida. In a 3–1 loss to Stoke City, Coquelin got off to a rocky first FA Cup debut. He was recalled in Aaron Ramsey's second half while playing in an unfamiliar right-back role.

Coquelin decided to move to Lorient on a student loan contract that saw him play football in France from 2010 to 2011. In the 2–1 home loss to Nice on August 14, 2010, he made his Lorient debut as a second-half substitute. When Lorient lost 6-3 to Lille, Coquelin grabbed his first assist. For Lorient's opener, he played a through-ball for Kevin Gameiro after defeating one Lille player. While playing right back against Valenciennes, Coquelin received his first red card. After a handball call, he was given his second yellow card. Lorient defeated Rennes 21-0; he scored the winner from close range after Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez spilled a Morgan Amalfitano long-range shot. Coquelin scored his first goal in professional football as Lorient defeated Rennes 2–1. Coquelin was particularly effective on the right hand side of midfield in the latter stages of the season. He completed his loan with Lorient, making 24 appearances in Ligue 1, one appearance in the Coupe de France and scoring one goal. Christian Gourcuff, the current Lorient boss, as well as Arsenal teammate Gilles Sunu, who is on a new year's loan, according to Sky Sports.

Coquelin returned to Arsenal in 2011 after missing pre-season for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup with France, and his first team league debut against Manchester United came on August 28th. In the 8–2 loss, he played 62 minutes before being recalled for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. In the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, Coquelin made his second Premier League appearance for Arsenal. Despite Arsenal losing the match 21-01, Coquelin was voted Man of the Match by fans for the first time. He made his UEFA Champions League debut for Arsenal in the 3–1 home loss to Olympiacos on December 6, 2011, playing 67 minutes before being recalled for Tomár Rosick. He signed a new long-term deal with Arsenal on January 10, 2012. After proving his versatility with a string of fine performances in both holding midfield and defense, the Frenchman had been given a new contract. In the 7-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers, Coquelin had his first assist; Robin van Persie converted his low cross to the front post.

Coquelin's squad number has increased from 39 to 22 since the 2012-13 season. In the 6–1 home win over Southampton, he got his first start of the season and was replaced by Aaron Ramsey. In the 6–1 win over Coventry City in the League Cup, Coquelin earned his first assist of the season; Olivier Giroud's sliding flick allowed him to score his first goal for the team. Coquelin was named Man of the Match by Arsenal.com on October 25, 2012, for his efforts in the 2–0 home loss against Schalke 04.

Arsenal revealed on July 5th that Coquelin would be loaned to SC Freiburg for the 2013–14 season. During the bulk of his time in Germany, he was playing out of place on the left wing, which he confessed to being "tough." He does however attribute his season loan there as being crucial to his growth as a player, and he scored his first goal at first-team level in a 2–1 victory over Slovan Liberec in the UEFA Europa League in November 2013.

Coquelin joined Charlton Athletic in November 2014 for a month's loan. He was not involved in any games for Arsenal during the first three months of season 2014-2015. He made his debut in Charlton's 2–2 away draw with Leeds United at Elland Road a day later. The initial loan contract with Coquelin was originally extended until December 2014, but the media announced that Coquelin had been suspended early due to an injury crisis at Arsenal on December 12th.

Coquelin was recalled from his loan at Charlton to cover for injuries in the team's 4–1 league victory over Newcastle United on December 13, 2014. Arsenal defeated West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground on Sunday, with Coquelin leading off the squad's next two matches against Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers for the first time in 23 months. Following all of this, Coquelin retained his place in the Arsenal team and performed admirably as the Gunners defeated champions Manchester City 2–0 at Etihad Stadium on January 18th, 2015. Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger discussed Coquelin's loan to Charlton on January 22, 2015, adding, "I noticed that he made significant improvements in preparation so I sent him on loan for match practice." Coquelin broke his nose against Everton on March 1st after a solid home showing as a midfield pivot to Santi Cazorla. On March 4, 2015, Coquelin wore a protective mask and put on a solid display in the heart of midfield against Queens Park Rangers.

On his return from loan at Charlton, Coquelin was a revelation, establishing himself as one of the Premier League's best defensive players. Since his first appearance in the Premier League and Champions League in December 2014, he continued to lead the league in defensive interceptions and "compare[d] favourably with defensive midfielders at the top clubs in the Premier League and Champions League. Arsène Wenger publicly expressed his surprise at the sudden impact Coquelin brought after returning from loan, according to The Guardian, Coquelin could be a "long-term solution."

In a 4–0 win over Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium on May 30th, Coquelin was selected to begin in the 2015 FA Cup Final, playing the full 90 minutes.

He appeared in the inaugural game of the season, the 2015 FA Community Shield against Chelsea, which Arsenal defeated Chelsea 1–0. Coquelin missed two games against Leicester City and Tottenham due to a minor injury in September, and was suspended for a League Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday in October. Despite the three missing matches, Coquelin appeared in every other Arsenal match since the season began, but his season was interrupted by a knee ligament injury suffered in a 2–1 loss to West Brom that barred him for three months.

Coquelin returned to training in mid-January 2016 and made his return to the first team on January 30th, starting from the beginning in Arsenal's 2–1 victory over Burnley in the FA Cup's fourth round.

Coquelin signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal on January 12, 2017.

Coquelin reported that he had agreed to a €14 million fee with Valencia, Spain's La Liga club Valencia, on January 11, 2018. In the 80th minute from a corner, he scored his third goal of his career and his first for Valencia.

Coquelin signed for Villarreal, a Spanish club, for a reported €13 million on a four-year contract on August 12, 2020.

International career

Coquelin is a French youth international with a record of under-17s, under-18s, under-19s, under-20s, and under-21s. Coquelin was a major factor in France's 2010 European Under-19 Championship triumph, winning four of France's five matches. In the semi-finals against Croatia, Coquelin skipped three challenges and lost a pass by for Cédric Bakambu to score the winning goal and place France in the final.

In France's final 21-man squad that competed at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Coquelin, as well as former Arsenal teammate Gilles Sunu were selected. With France finishing fourth in Colombia, Coquelin started and completed all seven of France's world cup matches.

In the 2–1 loss to Slovakia, Coquelin was issued his first red card at the under-21 level; he was dealt a straight red card after a challenge to Filip Kiss.
