Forrest Edward Mars Sr. (March 21, 1904-1904-July 1, 1999) was an American businessman and the Mars candy company's driving force.
He is best known for his creation of Milky Way (1923) and Mars (1932) chocolate candy bars, M&M's (1941) chocolate candy, as well as orchestrating the unveiling of Uncle Ben's Rice.
He was the son of Mars, Inc., a candy firm.
Frank C. Mars and his first wife Ethel G. Mars (née Kissack) were married in 1931.
Early life and career
Mars was born in Wadena, Minnesota, and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, after his parents' divorce when he was a boy. He hardly ever saw his father. He began high school and then enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, and later transferred to Yale University, where he obtained a degree in industrial engineering in 1928.
Forrest Mars reunited with his father at Mars, Inc., as an adult. However, the pair got into a squabble when Forrest wanted to expand abroad, but his father did not. He spent a few years as a bartender in Chicago and oversaw the construction of the Snickers and 3 Musketeer bars. "Forrest Mars will turn up frequently, with something new for us to try," Frances Herdlinger, a recently hired chemist at Mars Inc., remembers. Mars escaped from his father's buyout and relocated to England, where he created the Mars bar and Maltesers when he was estranged from his father in 1933. Mars briefly worked for Nestlé and Tobler in Europe.
He bought Chappel Bros, a British firm that specialized in canned meat for dogs in 1934. Forrest took over this market as he introduced and sold Chappie's canned food due to a lack of competition.
Mars established Food Products Manufacturing, where he established Uncle Ben's Rice line and a pet food franchise, Pedigree, after returning to the United States. Mars developed M&M's, a chocolate candy coated in a crunchy shell that "melts in your mouth, not in your hands" in 1940, in collaboration with Bruce Murrie. After Smarties, they may have been modeled. Peanut M&M's were first introduced in 1954, but Forrest had been allergic to peanuts his entire life. Murrie later left the company.
Forrest Mars, Inc., was purchased by Forrest Mars, Inc. following his father's death and merging the family company with his own business in 1964. He was married to Audrey Ruth Meyer (b. They had three children, Forrest Jr., John, and Jacqueline, who died in Chicago, D.C., on May 25, 1910, 1910.
Mars, Inc., was retired in 1973, handing over the company to his children.
He established Ethel M Chocolates in 1980, after his mother, who was living in Henderson, Nevada. In 1988, Mars, Inc., purchased Ethel M.
Mars died on July 1, 1999, in Miami, Florida, at the age of 95, having amassed a fortune of $4 billion. He was ranked 30th in Forbes magazine's list of richest Americans (Forrest Jr. and John were 29th and 31st respectively). He and his three children survived the company together.
In 1984, Mars was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame.
