Ford Kiernan Life

Ford John Kiernan (born 10 January 1962) is a Scottish comedian, actor, and writer.

He and his comeback partner, Greg Hemphill, are best known for co-writing and starring in Still Game and its predecessor Chewin's The Fate.

Between 2007 and 2008, Kiernan appeared in Dear Green Place as the lead character Archie Henderson. Ford rejoined the majority of the Still Game crew for the live broadcasts at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow in fall 2014, and the Hydro returned to the Hydro in February 2017 ahead of its 8th TV series.

Personal life

Kiernan was born in Shettleston, Glasgow, and attended Alexandra Parade Primary School and Whitehill Secondary School. He then went to study as a tailor and as a barman at Glasgow University.

Sonny, Ford's 12-year-old son, was discovered dead in the family's house in January 2014. The cause of death was coughing. Still Game Live was dedicated to Sonny later this year.

Career

Kiernan first performed comedy at the Glasgow comedy club in the basement of the Blackfriars pub in 1990. In 1993, he began working full time. He was given a slot in Edinburgh's Best Of Scottish Comedy in 1994, a collection of Scottish comedians starring John Paul "JP" Leach and Alan Taylor. Leach and Kiernan performed as a pair at this festival, and after Eight Mince and The Complete Bhoona, both at the Gilded Balloon, they appeared at the following two festivals.

In 1993, Kiernan was one of the first performers at The Comedy Cellar, a Glasgow comedy night founded by Ed Byrne. Don't Start Me, a play by JP Leach, which received a Fringe First Award at the 1995 Edinburgh Fringe, he co-wrote.

Kiernan has also appeared on BBC Radio Four and BBC Radio Scotland regularly.

Kiernan created sketches for Pulp Video (BBC Scotland, 1995). He wrote for Chewin's Fat from 1999 to 2005 and appeared in it alongside Greg Hemphill, both in various roles. The show was also attended by Karen Dunbar, Paul Riley, and Mark Cox. At first, it was only in Scotland, but the BBC televised the third and fourth series around the country.

The spin-off Still Game began in Scotland but soon attracted a larger audience. Kiernan and Hemphill co-authored every episode of this series. Kiernan and Hemphill also scripted seven episodes for the children's TV series Hububb in 1999 and 2000, with Kiernan guest-starring in three episodes, two of which were written by other writers.

In 2007, and 2008, Kiernan appeared in Dear Green Place, a BBC One Scotland sitcom about park wardens. Paul Riley and Rab Christie co-authored the script. Kiernan appeared in No Holds Bard, a one-off comedy special on BBC Scotland on Burns Night in January 2009 as part of a series of special programmes to celebrate Robert Burns' 250th birthday.

In the comedy Happy Hollidays, Kiernan played a caravan park boss. In early 2009, a pilot episode was broadcast on BBC 1, and a year later this year. In October 2011, Kiernan appeared in The Hunt for Tony Blair, a one-off episode of The Comic Strip Presents...

In 2011, and 2013, Kiernan appeared in The Field of Blood, as George McVie. Felix was a character in Journey Bound in 2016.

Kiernan has appeared in several bit-part films. He appeared alongside Robert Carlyle in Carla's Song in 1996, and in 2002, he appeared in the Martin Scorsese film Gangs of New York.

In the animated film Sir Billi, Kiernan lends his voice to Banjo Barry's character. In 2012, the film was released.

Kiernan appeared in the film Song for Amy in 2012. In short films including The Taxidermist and Perfect, he has appeared in short films as well. Kieran appeared in Gavin in the American comedy film Then Came You in 2020, alongside Craig Ferguson, who had appeared with Kiernan in Still Game three years ago.
