Fish Life

Derek William Dick (born 25 April 1958), better known as Fish on stage, is a Scottish singer-songwriter and occasional actor who rose to fame as the lead singer and lyricist of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion from 1981 to 1988.

He released 11 Top 40 singles with the band, including "Kayleigh," "Lavender" and "Incommunicado"), as well as five Top Ten albums, including a number one with Misplaced Childhood.

Fish has explored modern pop and traditional folk, as well as a "conflation of Roger Daltrey and Peter Gabriel," as his songs have been praised as "poetic prose."

Classic Rock ranked Fish at number 49 on its list of "The 100 Greatest Frontmen" in 2004, putting his "theatrical contribution" as "a significant contributor" to Marillion's ascension, and he conceived some "unique ornate lyrical theories." Fish was voted No. 37 in a poll of the top voices in rock music by Planet Rock listeners in 2009.

Early life

Derek William Dickenberry was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on April 25th, 1958, and he grew up in Dalkeith. Robert and Isabella Fish's son was educated at King's Park primary school and then Dalkeith High School. He was inspired by many of the rock stars of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including Genesis, Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, the Kinks, T. Rex, Argent, and the Alex Harvey Band (Fish would later pay tribute to these early influences on his covers album Songs From the Mirror). "One of the biggest influences on me" is Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, according to Fish, who also referred to her approach to song. Yes at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, 1974, was the first band he saw live. He was also an avid reader, and Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, Robert Burns, and Dylan Thomas were among his literary influences, and they would later be seen on the back of Marillion's Clutching at Straws' sleeve.

Fish worked as a petrol pump attendant, gardener, and forestry at the Bowhill Estate in Selkirk from 1977 to 1980. Moray adopted the word Fish, which came from a landlord who complained about how much time he spent in the bath when he was living in Fochabers. "With a real name of Derek William Dickson, it was vital to find a nickname as quickly as possible."

In 1980, he first appeared as a singer in Gala [Galashiels] in the Golden Lion pub," he said. Following a fruitful audition for the Stone Dome Band and then to Aylesbury in the process of joining Marillion, he migrated to Church Lane, Notts, in mid 1980.

Personal life

Fish married Tamara Nowy, a German actress who appeared in the music videos for "Kayleigh", "Lady Nina," and "A Gentleman's Excuse Me" on July 25th, 1987. In 2003, the two families divorced. Tara Rowena (Taz), the marriage's one daughter, was born on January 1, 1991. She was nominated for Scottish Model of the Year in 2012, but she lost to Annie Lennox's daughter.

Fish started a friendship with Heather Findlay, a popular autumn musician. He married Katie Webb, his second wife, in April 2009. After less than a year, the couple separated. Simone Rosler, his third wife, married at Aberlady Church, East Lothian, Scotland, on October 14, 2017.

Fish said in 2008 that he would be off from singing due to a "irregular cell growth" in his throat. It was later discovered that it was not cancerous.

Fish has been a fan of Edinburgh's Hibernian football team for all his life. He has also shown a keen interest in marine biology.

Fish Career

Solo career

Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, Fish's debut solo album, was released in January 1990. Several well-known musicians contributed to the album, including former Dire Straits guitarist Hal Lindes, who played guitar on most tracks and also contributed to the writing of three of the album's songs. Frank Usher, a Fish companion from pre-Marillion times, has also contributed. Drums were performed by Mark Brzezicki (Big Country) and John Keeble (Spandau Ballet), John Giblin contributed bass, and Lus Jardim contributed additional percussion. Tessa Niles, who had appeared on Clutching at Straws, was behinding vocals. Fish was also responsible for the theme song for the BBC television series Between the Lines in the 1990s.

Many of Fish's later works feature long spoken-word lyrics, some of which can be seen on earlier Marillion albums. Fish has collaborated with Genesis creator Tony Banks on his Still and Soundtracks albums, including on the songs "Shortcut to Somewhere," "Angel Face," and "Another Murder of a Day," co-writing the latter.

Fish appeared at World Bowl XI on June 14th, 2003, Hampden Park, Glasgow. Before kick-off, he had a rousing interpretation of "Caledonia."

Fish appeared on "The Cobbles" display at the Market Square in Aylesbury on August 26, 2007. For one song, 'Market Square Heroes,' he was joined on stage by his four former Marillion bandmates from the legendary line-up (Mark Kelly, Steve Rothery, Ian Mosley, and Pete Trewavas). This was the first time they had appeared together in nearly two decades. In a press interview following the concert, Fish denied that this would result in a complete reunion, saying, "Hogarth does a fantastic job with the band... We forged different paths over the 19 years."

On September 12, 2007, his album 13th Star was first revealed as a special ordered pre-release version that could be ordered from his website. In March 2008, Glyder introduced a UK tour for the album. Fish was confirmed to be the Friday-night headline act at NEARFest X in February 2008. On GMTV, he also appeared with BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris to promote Childline Rocks, a charity event.

Fish, Fish, was Fish on Friday evening radio show on the internet radio station Planet Rock. Malcolm Bluemel (with the support of Fish, Tony Iommi, Ian Anderson, and Gary Moore) helped save Planet Rock by purchasing the station when it was closed.

Fish embarked on his first full North American tour in ten years on June 9, 2008. He hosted a pre-show meet-and-greet with his fans at each stop. He was interviewed by Vince Font of the progressive rock podcast Prog'opolis, which was broadcast on the Dividing Line Broadcast Network (DLBN) two days before. "My Lunch With Fish" was the following week.

Fish won a Celebrity Music version of The Weakest Link in 2005, defeating Eggsy of Goldie Lookin Chain in the final round, earning £18,750 for Eggsy's charity and his own.

In Leamington Spa, the Fish hosted Fish Convention 2012 took place on October 20 to 21. He produced two acoustic sets and two electric sets, as well as pieces from his forthcoming release, Feast of Consequences. He also performed "Grendel," a fan-favourite Marillion B-side version, twice.

Fish's last studio album, Weltschmerz, was released in September 2020. The album was supported by the singles 'Welt Pain', "Garden of Remembrance," and 'This Party's Over'. The album received rave reviews and was extremely commercially profitable, with over 60,000 copies sold so far.
