Life and career
lvarez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Ataque de Pánico, lvarez' short film, was released in 2009. YouTube is a video sharing site. The film premiered on October 31, 2009 at the Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre film festival, before premiering online. A few weeks after, Varez signed a deal with Ghost House Pictures to produce a $30–$40 million sci-fi film. The Evil Dead remake's first project with Ghost House ended up being the direction and co-writing of the Evil Dead sequel. Following Evil Dead's debut, lvarez said he had "the urge to do big franchises," but he instead directed and co-wrote the relatively low budget horror film Don't Breathe (2016), which received praise. Lvarez later revealed that he was approached by Marvel Studios to produce an unspecified film, but that he refused to have no creative control over it. In 2017, Alvarez formed Bad Hombre, a joint venture with Good Universe, to start their own production company.
The Girl in the Spider's Web, a relaunch of the English-language The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series based on the novel of the same name, was directed by Lvarez. Comparing to the 2011 film, the film was released on November 9, 2018. In April 2019, lvarez, a writer from Doug Liman, produced reshoots for the 2021 film Chaos Walking, which cost an additional $15 million to the film's budget.
All nine episodes of Calls for Apple TV+, a primarily audio-based series with animated visual elements, were directed by lvarez in 2021. Don't Breathe 2, which was released by Rodo Sayagues on August 13, 2021, was also co-wrote and co-produced by the author. It was announced in March 2022 that lvarez would write and direct an Alien film after pitching his own story, and was said to be "unconnected" to the previous films in the franchise, including the release of a film on Hulu.
In September 2013, Varez was contracted to direct a live action version of Dante's Inferno for Universal Pictures, but no further information had been released since the game's announcement. In May 2016, Lvarez was commissioned to direct an adaptation of Monsterpocalypse for Warner Bros. Based on a script by Daniel Casey, lvarez was hired to direct an Incognito for Sony Pictures in October 2016. As director of The Batman, lvarez was supposed to replace Ben Affleck.
With Nicole Perlman and Jay Basu, lvarez was confirmed to direct and co-write a spin-off to Labyrinth on April 13, 2017. However, lvarez revealed in April 2020 that he had stepped down as director.
