Life and career
Faouzia Ouihya was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and with her family and friends left for Notre Dame-de-Lourdes, Manitoba, Canada, at the age of one, before settling in the small town of Carman, Manitoba. Samia (one of her managers) and Kenza (her photographer), she has two sisters. She was born Muslim and often went back to her home country. Faouzia said she is "very connected" to the country and the region [North Africa]. Despite growing up in Canada, I grew up eating Moroccan food [and] wearing Moroccan clothing." "Maybe not fitting in is the hardest thing I've had to tackle" in an interview, she revealed that she felt excluded as a child. Her first composition was inspired by this sense of exclusion, in which she celebrated people's differences. When her sister Samia played the piano, she wished she knew how to play it at the age of four. Faouzia began writing songs and poems when she was five years old and playing piano at the age of six. She learned how to play guitar and violin later in life. She speaks fluent English, French, and Arabic, the former being the one she used most with her family.
She won Song of the Year, Audience Award, and Grand Prix at the 2015 La Chicane Éléctrique at the age of fifteen. She began posting her songs and other publications on YouTube, which resulted in her joining She began promoting her music and other services on YouTube, leading to a deal with Paragon Talent Agency. "Knock on My Door" was her debut single, and she did a good job despite her early success.
In 2016, she received second place in the Walk of Fame Emerging Artist Mentorship Program in the United States. She was the recipient of the grand prize at the Nashville Unsigned Only music competition in 2017. She worked with fellow Manitoban artist Matt Epp on their album "The Sound" and then advanced to the International Songwriting Competition, the world's biggest songwriting competition. The two are the first Canadians to win the top prize in the country's 16-year history, defeating 16,000 other entries from 137 nations. At The Forks, Winnipeg, Manitoba, she appeared with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, commemorating Canada's 150th anniversary.
Faouzia appears in David Guetta's album "Battle" on August 24th. Guetta praised Faouzia's "great voice, vibrant tone, and unique look" for why he picked her for his album in a French language interview with Le Matin. Faouzia recalled that she "was still in high school when I heard that there was a possibility of me working with him," and that it was "one of my proudest career moments so far." She enrolled in the University of Manitoba majoring in computer engineering at the time. Kelly Clarkson was invited by Kelly Clarkson to translate her song "I Dare You" to Moroccan Arabic in early 2020, which was released on April 16th. About a month after, the Swedish EDM pair Galantis invited her to appear in their song "I Fly" for the soundtrack of the film SCOOB!
On August 6, 2020, Faouzia's first extended play (EP), Stripped, was published. It features six stripped (acoustic version) songs, 5 of which were never released, five of which were previously released, and one of which, "100 Bandaids," is a new track. Faouzia performed the tracks live at the Burton Cummings Theatre on August 20th, to promote the EP.
"Minefields" was released by American singer-songwriter John Legend on November 5, 2020. Faouzia revealed in July 2021 that she had been working on her debut studio album for a few years. "Don't Tell Me I'm Pretty," "Hero," "Puppet", "Puppet" and "Dear, Love" were also released by the singer. Faouzia's second EP, Citizens, was released on May 19, 2022.
