F. Gary Gray Career

Career

Taking advantage of a step-by-step approach, he planned to work a number of years in film as an assistant and hoped to direct his first film by the time he had turned 45. He started working as a camera operator on websites such as Screen Scene as soon as he left high school. He appeared in the comedy Major League (1989). He had his first chance to direct with music videos, beginning with a video for the hip-hop group WC and the Maad Circle (WC was a former classmate of his). He produced the music video for Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day" in 1993. The video is a literal translation of the lyrics. He'll continue to produce Ice Cube sequels as well as artists like Cypress Hill, Outkast, Dr. Dre, and Queen Latifah. At age 26, Gray produced his first film, a buddy stoner comedy based on his experiences in Los Angeles (who co-wrote the film based on his experiences). With Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah, he produced Set It Off. He starred Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson in The Negotiator, the 1998 Acapulco Film Festival's highest accolade.

Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg appear in The Italian Job, a 2003 action-thriller starring Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg. Gray received the Best Director award at the 2004 Black American Film Festival for his contributions to the film, which eclipsed the $100 million figure in the domestic box office. Vin Diesel's next film, A Man Apart, an action thriller, was released. Be Cool, Elmore Leonard's book of the same name, will be directed by him later. Critics had panned the John Travolta car, but it went on to gross over $95 million worldwide.

He later produced Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler and written by Kurt Wimmer. The film earned over $100 million worldwide. Gray was named by the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center as one of the "50 Best and Brightest African Americans Under 40" by Black Enterprise magazine. He was lauded by the African American Film Critics Association with their 2004 Special Achievement Award, as well as being lauded by the Artist Empowerment Alliance with the Artist Empowerment Award that same year. In 2010, he received the Pan-African Film and Arts Festival's Pioneer Director award.

Straight Outta Compton, a biographical film about the rap group N.W.A., was directed by Gray in 2015. Gray directed The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, which was released on April 14, 2017. Both films set the record for best opening by a black director on film, and The Fate of the Furious became the first African-American film directed by an African-American to gross over $1 billion worldwide. Gray would direct an adaptation of Saints Row's video game franchise in April 2019, with a screenplay written by Greg Russo. It was announced in September 2021 that he would direct the heist film Lift starring Kevin Hart for Netflix.
