Evander Kane Career

Playing career

Kane was drafted 19th overall in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft by the Vancouver Giants' 2005 WHL Bantam Draft. He received his first WHL call-up for a game against the Seattle Thunderbirds on December 13, 2006, owing to other Giants' international commitments in the World Junior Championships. Kane scored his first WHL goal, a game-tying marker, on March 25, 2007, the final game of the regular season. He also suited up for five WHL postseason games after being originally called up for the playoffs after Giants forward Tim Kraus was suspended for game three of the first round. As part of the Giants' 2007 Memorial Cup championship, he appeared in two Memorial Cup games, tallying an assist.

Kane's rookie season with the Giants was to begin with a minor setback, as he was forced to miss the beginning of training camp due to a case of mononucleosis. Despite this, he recovered and rejoined the Giants full-time to score 24 goals – third in team scoring – and 41 points in his first WHL season. He was nominated for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the year's best WHL rookie of the year, which was given to Brandon Schenn of the Brandon Wheat Kings, finishing tenth in rookie scoring.

Kane's off to a good start in the 2008-09 season, with at least a point in each of his first 22 games. On October 12, he earned his first WHL hat-trick against the Kelowna Rockets on October 10, 2008. He was named WHL Player of the Week for the Week, replacing injured linemate Casey Pierro-Zabotel, who had been selected the previous week. Kane competed for a spot as an injury replacement at the 2009 World Junior Championships with Team Canada. Kane was named Player of the Week for the second week in a row following the World Juniors on January 12, 2009. He was captain of Team Cherry in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game later this month.

Kane's second WHL season featured 48 goals and 96 points, fourth in league scoring. He surpassed Adam Courchaine's record of 43 goals in a single season, which was set in 2002-03. Pierro-Zabotel's 115 points placed second in team scoring, while the line-mates finished one-two in all-time Giants' single-season scoring as Pierro-Zabotel and Kane both hit Gilbert Brulé's previous 87-point record. Kane, along with colleagues Pierro-Zabotel and Jonathon Blum, received WHL First Team All-Star recognition, as well as teammates Pierro-Zabotel and Jonathon Blum. Kane won a double-overtime game against the Spokane Chiefs in the second round of the 2009 playoffs after the Giants thrashed the Prince George Cougars in the first round. The Giants were then defeated by the Kelowna Rockets in six games in the semi-finals after losing the Chiefs in the seventh game. Kane scored 15 points in 17 games during the postseason.

The Atlanta Thrashers ranked Kane fourth overall. The Thrashers signed Kane to an entry-level deal on July 20, 2009.

Kane was ruled out of the Thrashers' lineup for the 2009–10 season. In his debut in NHL, he scored an assist against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 3, 2009, scoring his first NHL point on his debut in his career on October 3, 2009. In a 4–2 victory over the St. Louis Blues, his first goal was scored five days later on October 8, defeating Chris Mason with a snap shot. During a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 6, 2010, he suffered a bone fracture, late in his rookie season, blocking a shot. Before returning to the lineup on April 3, Kane played 15 games before returning to the field on April 3. Kane scored 14 goals and 26 points in 66 games, ranking 12th among first-year point scorers.

Kane suffered with multiple minor injuries during his second NBA season in 2010-2011. Kane sustained a left knee injury during a game against the Colorado Avalanche on November 30, 2010; he missed two games due to a teammate Tobias Enström's injury; He missed one game due to an arm injury suffered during a December 7 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In January 2011, he missed an additional six games due to a lower-body injury. Kane, who was out of the lineup for a total of nine games, boosted his points total to 43 with 19 goals and 24 assists. He came in fifth place in team point-scoring, third among forwards behind captain Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little.

The Thrashers were acquired and relocated by True North Sports and Entertainment during the offseason, making the new Winnipeg Jets. Kane was enjoying a fruitful first season as a Jet, leading his team in scoring with 18 goals and 31 points as of mid-January 2012. However, he was hospitalized with a concussion that was first announced on January 21 during that month. In a 7–0 victory over the Florida Panthers on March 1, 2012, he played a four-point game (two goals and two assists) later in the season. Kane signed a six-year, $31.5 million deal extension with the Jets on September 15, 2012.

Kane joined Dinamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League as a result of the 2012–13 NHL lockout. He was the first Canadian NHL player to sign a KHL deal. However, Kane was suspended after 12 games with the club, in which he scored one goal, but after 12 games with the club, in which he scored one goal, and Kane was suspended. Kane's athletic director suggested that the club "could not adapt to hockey in the KHL," but that both teams mutually agreed to end the relationship.

Kane was accused of assault following a Vancouver shooting on April 3, 2014; he was later sued for financial loss. In a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 5, 2014, Kane was a healthy scratch under new head coach Paul Maurice. Maurice said it was a coach's decision, and that if Kane wanted to return to the lineup, all he had to do was "probably come to the rink." Kane was a healthy scratch against the Vancouver Canucks on February 3, 2015. He was later discovered to have been scratched due to an incident with his colleagues. Kane said in a Skype interview in October 2015 that he felt the Jets did not "have his back" when he had legal and emotional problems, but that they had to give up their problem.

Kane was traded by the Jets, as well as Zach Bogosian and the right to Jason Kasdorf in exchange for Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft (Jack Roslovic). Kane cracked three ribs in the season-opening game when battling for the puck with Alexei Emelin of the Montreal Canadiens, which left him unable to play indefinitely.

Sabres boss benched him ahead of the 2018 trade deadline, owing to his weak results and approaching the end of his deal. The Sabres sent Kane to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Danny O'Regan, a conditional first-round or second-round pick in 2019, as well as a conditional fourth-round pick in 2020. Kane had two assists in a 5–2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on his first appearance in his Sharks debut. Kane scored his first NHL hat-trick against the Calgary Flames on March 16, 2018, followed by his fourth goal, contributing more than half of the Sharks' 7–4 victory. In his time with Buffalo and San Jose in the 2017-18 season, Kane appeared in 78 games and scored 54 points. Kane's 78 games was the most in a season. The 54 points was the second-highest season total in Kane's history to that point.

During Game 1 of the Western Conference semi-finals on April 26, 2018, Kane received a one-game suspension for cross-checking Vegas Golden Knights forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. Kane has scored four goals and five points in nine playoffs games. On May 24, 2018, the Sharks re-signed Kane to a seven-year, $49 million deal worth $7 million per year. Kane has stated that he intends to remain with the Sharks for the remainder of his career.

Kane's career totaled 56 points during the 2018–19 season, second-highest point total of his career) and led the NHL in penalty minutes with 153.

Kane was suspended for the first three games of the regular season as a result of misconduct policies during the 2019-20-20 season. Kane made the first Sharks player to record a first period hat trick in a 5–2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes two games after returning from suspension. Kane scored three straight goals in just over ten minutes during the second period in a 5–4 overtime loss on January 5, 2020. Kane was suspended for three games after suffering an elbow injury in a game against the Winnipeg Jets on February 14, 2020. Kane ranked as the league's top penalty minutes with 122 while still scoring 26 goals and 47 points in his fifth season in a row.

Kane was banned by the NHL for the first 21 games of the 2021-22 season for "violation of, and lack of compliance with, the NHL/NHLPA COVID-19 rules." Kane was placed on waivers and was re-assigned to AHL for the first time in his career following his release on November 28, 2021.

The Sharks had placed Kane on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his employment, according to AHL COVID-19 guidelines.

Shortly after San Jose's attempt to terminate Kane's employment, rumors began to circulate that the Edmonton Oilers were interested in signing Kane. The Oilers had started the season well but then went on a downward slide that saw them fall out of playoff contention by the midpoint, and pressure had been put on general manager Ken Holland to step in to improve the team's fortunes. Kane's service as a result of his success as a goal-corer, was seen as a potential answer. Kane signed a one-year deal with the Oilers on January 27, 2022. Kane's signing caused some controversies, but Oilers Connor McDavid defended him. "We're a squad that's going to go on a run," McDavid said. We're looking for a guy who could come in and contribute to the whole thing in anyway possible. He was excellent in admitting that there may be some criticism, but it is a good chance for both directions. For him to reestablish himself in the NHL and for us to add a player of his caliber."

Kane made his Oilers debut on January 29, scoring the game's first goal in a 7–2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Kane spent most of the team's top line with McDavid and Jesse Puljujärvi during the regular season. Kane had the highest shooting percentage of his career, and he was credited with helping the team's even-strength play. He finished the season with 22 goals and 17 assists, while the Oilers finished second in the Pacific Division and qualified for the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs. Kane was a natural performer in the team's first round matchup with the Los Angeles Kings, with his first ever playoff hat trick in Game 3. He finished the season with seven goals, one more than he had scored in any previous playoff games. In the second round of the playoff "Battle of Alberta," the Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames in the first playoff "Battle of Alberta" in 31 years. During the second period of Game 3 of the second round, he had his second playoff hat trick, this time a natural one. Kane sparked controversy in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final against the Colorado Avalanche centre Nazem Kadri, receiving a five-minute major penalty for boarding and causing Kadri to be postponed for the remainder of the season due to injury. As a result, Kane was suspended for one game.

Kane's four-year, $20.5 million deal pact with the Oilers was signed on July 12, 2022.
