Eunice Gayson Life

Eunice Elizabeth Sargaison (17 March 1928 – August 8, 2018), also known as Eunice Gayson, was an English actress best known for playing Sylvia Trench, James Bond's love interest in the first two Bond films (Dr.

No. 2 and Love in Russia. She is therefore considered to have been the first-ever "Bond girl" in history.

Early life

In 1928, Gayson and her twin sister Patricia were born in Croydon, England, to John and Maria Sargaison (née Gammon). Her father was a public servant. The family lived in Streatham, London, and then moved to Purley, Surrey, and then Glasgow, before settling in Edinburgh. There, she studied operatic singing and attended the Edinburgh Academy.

Personal life

In 1953, Gayson married Leigh Vance, a writer whose marriage was chronicled on the American daytime television show Bride and Groom. They divorced in 1959, and Brian Jackson married her film and stage actor Brian Jackson in 1968. After ten years of marriage, she and Jackson had a daughter before divorcing. Kate's daughter was portrayed in the 1995 Bond film GoldenEye. Gayson died on June 8, 2018, at the age of 90.

Eunice Gayson Career

Career

Gayson appeared in The Revenge of Frankenstein, a Hammer horror film starring a young James Bond and Roger Moore), and The Avengers (which starred a future James Bond). She appeared in The Sound of Music's 1962 film version, Baroness Elsa Schraeder, during which she also shot scenes for the first two Bond films, Dr. No (1962) and From Russia with Love (1963). She remained a regular in London theatre, appearing in The Grass Is Greener (1971), among other things. Gayson appeared in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods in the role of the grandmother in the early 1990s.

In the first two James Bond films, Dr. No and From Russia with Love, Gayson played James Bond's love interest in London, Sylvia Trench. Bond tries to establish a friendship with her in the early scenes, but she is called away on a journey before anything serious can be developed. This was supposed to be a running theme in several films, but after the second film, the character was dropped. The character is responsible for Bond's most popular introduction catch, "Bond, James Bond"; when Trench introduces herself to Bond as "trench, Sylvia Trench" during a game of chemin de fer in Dr. No, after she questions Trench's "Mister?"

Gayson had been cast as Miss Moneypenny, M's secretary, initially, but Lois Maxwell, the actress who played Moneypenny, was originally portrayed as Sylvia Trench. However, Maxwell found the Trench character too immodest, and their roles were redesigned. Gayson is thus regarded as the first "Bond girl" in the United Kingdom.
