Golea started training at School Club N2 in Bucharest under the direction of Lucia Marcu and Mihai Demetrescu. She then joined the national team in Deva, where she worked with Adrian Gorean, Adrian Stan, and Maria Cosma. She made her debut as a senior in an international competition in 1984. Both Aurelia Dobre and Golea earned outstanding tens from the judges, with Golea being one of three women (along with Elena Shushunova and Svetlana Baitova) to debut the double twisting yurchenko at the World Championships this year. Elena Shushunova was also awarded the silver medal on vault after winning the silver medal on vault. At the 1987 European Championships in Moscow, she earned two more individual medals, including a silver on beam and a bronze on vault.
