Career
Yang did freelance work, filming, and writing for five years after college.
He began working with BuzzFeed's video division in 2013, on the recommendation of a colleague who saw his potential in making short format videos. He was given free reign over experimental video productions and exploring new forms of storytelling.
A few of his works were centered on stereotypes, body issues, and Asian American identity, with the publication of If Disney Princes Were Real, which attracted over 70 million viewers, and Women's Ideal Body Types Throughout History, which was one of Buzzfeed's most watched segments. "Yang's videos work because they're funny-with-a-message riffs on all-American cultural staples, including high school versus college, awkward private moments, and pet ownership, according to Glamour. However, he's also not afraid to discuss racial issues, particularly in the Asian American community.
In response to some of his early sketches, reactions were overwhelmingly positive, resulting in more experimental sketches such as The Try Guys, which was introduced in Buzzfeed in 2014 along with co-stars Ned Fulmer(former member of the Try guys), Zach Kornfeld, and Zach Kornfeld. The display is a mash-up of social commentary and humour depicting situations such as men going through labor pains and a prostate cancer check at a doctor's office. Since receiving positive feedback, the cast members were initially reluctant to step out from behind the camera because they had limited exposure to being actors, but they continued to produce videos for the show.
Yang became a household name on social media, facing challenges like "Guys Try Ladies' Underwear For The First Time" in the first season's first season. He was deemed as the breakout star of The Try Guys by the New York Times.
On June 16, 2018, he and the majority of the cast of The Try Guys revealed that they had left BuzzFeed and formed 2nd Try LLC, a company that they own and operate. The second attempt LLC obtained the rights to The Try Guys brand. As his deal was up before the other Try Guys, Yang was the first of The Try Guys to leave Buzzfeed.
On May 4, 2019, the Try Guys announced that they were publishing The Unknown Power of F*cking Up, a book that was published on June 18, 2019 and became a New York Times Best Seller. The Try Guys also revealed their tour, which included a "'80s rock-band theme" and their podcast, which is titled "Try-Pod."
The Try Guys supported Joe Biden's presidential campaign in 2020 in October.
Yang appeared on NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Theo Lorql in 2019.
Ambrosius Goldenloin, a Disney film set in 2023, is expected to appear in Nimona's animated film, Ambrosius Goldenloin.
Yang has revealed that his YA fiction writing debut, The Unders, will be a two-part queer fantasy epic, with the first book set to be published in Spring 2024.
