Ethan Phillips (born February 8, 1955) is an American actor and playwright.

He is best known for his television appearances as Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager and PR man Pete Downey on Benson.

Personal life

Phillips was born on Long Island, New York. Frankie & Johnnie's, a steakhouse on 45th and Eighth Avenues in New York City, was the owner. He earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Boston University as well as a Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University. In the Alan Wasserman Jazz Band, he plays the tenor saxophone.

Ethan Phillips began his show business career in New York City, performing off-Broadway at Theaters such as Direct Theater, Best of the Actors' Festival, Christopher Durang's The Nature and Purpose of the Universe's premiere; and in a revival of Eccentricities of a Nightingale. Tennessee Williams, who was assisting with the creation of the new film, wrote a new monologue for Phillips, which Williams personally dictated to him when it was revealed that leading lady Jill Eikenberry required more time for a makeover.

In 1979–80, Phillips played Maurice Utrillo in Dennis McIntyre's Modigliani's premier, with Jeffrey DeMunn at the Astor Place Theater. It was a success in 208 performances.

Phillips appeared in several plays in New York over the next 15 years, including Terrence McNally's Lips Together, Teeth Apart at the Lucille Lortel, Measure for Measure, Playwrights Horizons, the American Jewish Theater, and many others.

He went on to appear with Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in the Premier of David Mamet's November and performed it again with John Malkovich and Patti Lupone for Speakers in the House. In The Imaginary Invalid's 2012 SummerScape Festival, he played the title role opposite Peter Dinklage. Stanley Levison appeared in Robert Schenkkan's All the Way at the American Repertory Theater in 2013-14. Phillips followed the play to the Neil Simon Theater in Broadway, where the production received the Tony Award for Best Play and Best Actor, Bryan Cranston. More recently, Phillips was one of the leading figures in Dennis Kelly's Taking Care of Baby, Terrence McNally's Golden Age, and Sharyn Rothstein's By the Sea, all for the Manhattan Theatre Club (off-Broadway). In the Broadway premiere of Ayad Akhtar's Junk: The Golden Age of Debt at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater, Ethan Lefkowitz played Murray Lefkowitz.

Phillips' regional theater performances include leading roles for San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, the Alaska Repertory Theatre, at the Seattle Repertory Theater, The American Repertory Company, The American Repertory Theater, The Salt Lake Acting Co., and the McCarter Theater. Phillips performed in Side Man at the Pasadena Playhouse in Lips Together, Teeth Apart for the Mark Taper Forum; in You Can't Take It With You at the Geffen Playhouse and as Polonius in Hamlet for the Uprising Theater in Los Angeles.

Phillips has appeared in the Best Short Plays of 1989 (Applause, ed.) He appeared at the Sundance Institute's Playwrights Conference in Utah for six summers, where he created his script Penguin Blues, which is published by Samuel French Inc. and is included in the Best Short Plays of 1989 (Applause, ed. Ramon Delgado (doctor), a pedo from Guillerio (heart), is a teenager who lives in the United States. Phillips was a founding member of Sundance, a playwright development lab in Los Angeles, based on his experiences at Sundance.

Phillips has appeared in more than fifty films, beginning with Ragtime (directed by Milo Forman). For Richer or Poorer, Jeffrey, The Shadow, Wagons East, The Man Without a Face, Green Card, Lean On Me, Critters, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Bad Santa, and The Babysitters are among the many notable features on Broadway. Shadow Witness, Audrey, the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, Woody Allen's Irrational Man, and James DeMonaco's The Purge: Election Year are among the new films.

Phillips appeared on Benson's cast in 1980, playing PR man Pete Downey for five seasons.

Pushing Daisies, Bones (TV Series), Eli Stone, Juzzoli & Isles, Deadbeat, The Good Guys and Veep are among the many guest appearances on television series and tele films, including Pushing Daisies, Bones, The Good Guys and The Mentalist, Los Angeles, L.A. — From the Best Call Saul and Veep. In the final two seasons of Lena Dunham's Girls, he appeared in the recurring role of Keith. Spike Martin is currently in Armando Iannucci's space comedy Avenue 5 on HBO.

In the "Ménage à Troi" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, he began his Star Trek career as Dr. Farek. In 1995, he joined Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager, and stayed with the show through the entire seven seasons. In the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact's holographic nightclub maître d', he appeared as a Ferengi pirate captain and appeared as a Ferengi pirate captain in the "Acquisition" episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Phillips has also appeared in many of the Star Wars franchise video games: 2000's Star Wars: Battlefronts, 2001's Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, and 2003's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
