When employees worked from HOME, federal officials blasted spending $3.3 billion on office furniture, including $250K on solar-powered picnic tables for the CDC and $120K on luxurious leather recliners for just one US Embassy

Despite Covid restrictions causing the majority of employees to work from home, a bombshell study revealed that the federal government maintained its pre-pandemic office spending from 2020 to 2022. Almost $250,000 on solar-powered picnic tables for the CDC and $120,000 on plush Ethan Allen leather chairs were among the US government's most infrequent spending habits. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's splurging, which culminated in more than $250,000 on high-end Herman Miller furniture, costing eco-friendly picnic spots around the same time. Despite reportedly shifting to a much smaller 300,000 square foot office space in Pennsylvania at the same time, the Environmental Protection Agency paid $6.5 million for new decor. And the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, in one particularly 'egregious' situation' that is sure to send frugal lawmakers wild, invested $15 million on new furniture, roughly $14,400 for each of its 1,000 employees. In a study by taxpayer watchdog OpenTheBooks, the spending sprees were revealed on Tuesday, finding that over $1 billion was invested on lavish decor for federal spaces between 2020 and 2022, but only a fraction of employees made it into the office during Covid-19 lockouts.
