Haim (hypothetic in all caps) is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles.
Este Haim (bass guitar and vocals), Danielle Haim (vocals and guitar), and Alana Haim (guitars, keyboards, and vocals).
Each member is also fluent in several other areas in addition to their primary devices.
The group's pop sound on their studio recordings is in contrast to their live shows' more rock-based music. The sisters grew up in a musical family and began playing instruments from an early age in the rock band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna.
Este and Danielle, the two elder sisters, first appeared with Valli Girls in 2005.
Under that name, they had released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums, but they had to leave the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
They established Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but they did not seriously consider it a career for many years.
Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012 after Danielle became a popular touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and then with Julian Casablancas. Forever (an EP that was limited-time download), the group's first release, as well as positive support at the South by Southwest festival, resulted in a contract with Polydor Records and a joint agreement with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012.
Days Are Gone, the band's debut album, began recording sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival.
The album debuted in the top ten in many nations, including the top ten in the United Kingdom, and the group had received numerous "best of" awards by the end of 2013.
At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, the group was selected for Best New Artist.
Something to Tell You, their second album, was released in July 2017.
Career
Este Arielle (born March 14, 1986), Danielle Sari (born February 16, 1989), and Alana Mychal (born December 15, 1991) were both born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California, United States, to Jewish parents. Mordechai "Moti" Haim, the family's father, and their American mother Donna were both musicians; although he had been a professional soccer player in Israel, Moti played drums, and Donna won a contest on The Gong Show in the 1970s performing a Bonnie Raitt song. The father's maternal Jewish family is from Bulgaria. Although Danielle demonstrated a natural talent for the guitar at a young age, Moti made the decision that Este would be more appropriate to the bass, purchasing her a second-hand Fender for $50. The siblings were encouraged to attend their parents' 1970s classic rock and Americana albums, and they formed a band called Rockinhaim to perform cover versions at local charity fairs, with Moti on drums and Donna on guitar. The group appeared at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles in 2000, their first rock concert. They performed classic wedding band stuff, including the Beatles' "Get Back," Billy Joel's "You May Be Correct" and Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," but they did not do free community and charity concerts at churches, schools, and hospitals.
Danielle and Ester were invited to join the Valli Girls, an all-female pop rock band that has signed to Columbia Records in 2004. They recorded a few one-off songs and later appeared on the soundtrack to The Traveling Pants' 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The group appeared at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, and their song "Valli Nation" was included in the accompanying soundtrack. Danielle and Ester were released shortly after.
The sisters became more interested in incorporating pop and contemporary R&B into their music, and in 2007, they formed their own band. The trio performed at a Jewish deli in Hollywood and were paid in matzah ball soup for their first performance. Early gigs were sparsely packed; Danielle recalls, "We were [at the] bottom of the bill at 50-capacity venues and no one would come."
Haim performed local venues for the next five years, but did not consider music as a career because the three sisters were occupied with other projects. Este was studying at UCLA and received a degree in ethnomusicology in 2010, specializing in Bulgarian and Brazilian music. Alana graduated in 2010 from Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.
Danielle was discovered by musician Jenny Lewis at a jam session in Laurel Canyon, which resulted in Danielle joining Lewis' touring band. Julian Casablancas, the Strokes' lead vocalist, came to see one of Lewis' shows on tour, and he in turn asked Danielle to play guitar and percussion on his solo tour. Danielle rehearsed with Casablancas' band every day for two months, which she later described as "an eye-opening experience." She auditioned for a spot in Scarlet Fever, the all-female backing band for Ceelo Green, from late 2009 to mid 2010. On Jay Leno's Tonight Show, Danielle appeared only once with the group.
Although Danielle loved touring, she decided she'd like to perform her own music with her sisters rather than going for a lucrative tour with Green. Casablancas recommended that Danielle write more content and concentrate on recording in order to raise their online presence.
Haim began playing shows for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Henry Clay People and Kesha, and Kesha, in February 2012 as a time-limited free download on their website. At the EP's debut party at the Los Angeles Bootleg Theatre, Dash Hutton officially joined as drummer. Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night is the son of a musician who performed at Estee on Fire. Following a string of performances at the South by Southwest festival in March, the EP attracted interest from the music industry. Danielle recalled that the first performance was "probably a disaster," but the remainder of the programs attracted more attention. In June, the band in the United Kingdom signed a deal with Polydor Records.
Independent record label National Anthem re-released the Forever EP on 10" vinyl in July, containing the original three songs as well as a fourth track, a Dan Lissvik remix of "Forever." Haim toured the United Kingdom in November 2012 and then supported Florence and the Machine on their UK and Ireland tour in December, following dates supporting Mumford & Sons on their Gentlemen of the Road tour in the United States in August.
The Forever EP's title track was selected by British music publication NME, which is the No. 1. The 4track of 2012. Haim topped the BBC's annual Sound of 2013 music industry survey on January 4, 2013 to find the most promising new musical performers for the coming year. The corporation also signed a management deal with Roc Nation, which had returned to South by SouthWest in March 2013 and received their own "At Your Request" video feature on Idolator. They appeared on American recording artist Kid Cudi's third studio album Indicud in early 2013, on the song titled "Red Eye." Danielle Haim appeared on "You're No Good" from Major Lazer's second album, Free the Universe, alongside Santigold, Vybz Kartel, and Yasmin.
Days Are Gone, the band's debut album, was released in live sessions. The group experimented with drum machines and the music software GarageBand, adding hip hop and R&B influences to their existing sound. Polydor recommended that producers Ariel Rechtshaid and James Ford assist with the album's success, and that synthesizers could be used more often, bringing the album closer to a classic pop style. Several of the drum tracks were recorded with gated reverb, made popular by Phil Collins. The band appeared on "It's Alright, It's OK," "Rocks," and "Come Together" at Glastonbury Festival in June 2013. The band appeared at Glastonbury in 2014 for a second time. Este, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2000, had a diabetic seizure after taking insulin and forgetting to eat after. She returned from backstage, but not for the remainder of their set.
On July 29, the single "The Wire" was released, and the album was released on September 30. The album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and has since sold 200,000 copies. On the BBC's The Wire," the group performed "The Wire," with Este dedicating the song to then-British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was also a guest on the show. The step was condemned by musician Johnny Marr of the Smiths, who said, "It's really simple: they made themselves look like idiots." It's ridiculous. No one dared a gun to their head. Haim did not respond, but the Conservatives attempted to do the same thing with the Smiths, to re-appropriate us in a false way.
Haim also toured Europe during the remainder of 2013, recruiting touring keyboardist Tommy King as well as performing as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live with host Josh Hutcherson on November 23. The group performed "The Wire" and "Don't Save Me" on Saturday Night Live, and Ester thought this performance particularly poignant because a high school drama teacher had once told her, "You're never going to be on Saturday Night Live." In April 2014, the main tour in the United States began in April 2014 and then extended into May.
The sisters performed backing vocals with the New Basement Tapes in 2014 for their album Lost on the River, performing on the tracks "Kansas City" and "The Whistle Is Blowing."

They continued to record their second album, after a year of touring. On the original soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Insurgent, the band appears. The band contributed to Calvin Harris' fourth studio album Motion's "Pray to God" in November.

On May 3, the company's lead single, "Want You Back," was announced. The band followed up the release with a number of promotional appearances, including a return to Saturday Night Live, where they performed "Want You Back" and "Little of Your Love" during their setback. Haim also confirmed the Sister Sister Sister Sister Tour for the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom in early 2018.
In 2017, Hutton left the band to concentrate on his own projects.
