Essence Uhura Atkins (born February 7, 1972) is an American actress and model.

She began her career on television sitcoms before settling on the short-lived first African-American prime time drama Under One Roof (CBS, 1995). Atkins is best known for her appearances on television comedies.

Tasha Yvette Henderson appeared in The WB's Smart Guy from 1997 to 1999.

Dee Dee Thorne appeared in UPN sitcom Half & Half (2002–06) and TBS comedy series Are We There Yet? Suzanne Kingston-Persons is the author of (2010-2012) Suzanne Kingston-Persons.

Atkins appeared in Deliver Us From Eva (2003), Dance Flick (2009), A Haunted House (2013), and A Haunted House 2 (2014).

Personal life

Jaime Mendez, a Puerto Rican high school football free safety, married Atkins in September 2009. They celebrated Valentine's Day 2008 through the online dating service Match.com. Valarie Pettiford, her Half and Half co-star, appeared at the reception.

The couple revealed on August 9, 2011 that they were expecting their first child together. In December 2011, Essence gave birth to their first child. In 2016, the couple wed.

Career

In 1986, Atkins began her career as a teenage guest on NBC's The Cosby Show. During the following years, she appeared on sitcoms including Family Matters before landing a co-leading role opposite James Earl Jones and Vanessa Bell Calloway in the short-lived first African-American prime time soap opera Under One Roof in 1995. Keri Russell co-starred with Keri Russell in the NBC teen soap opera Malibu Shores, which happened the following year. In 1993, one of her television appearances was in Saved by the Bell's spin-off Saved by the Bell's Saved by the Bell: The College Years. She appeared in the pilot, but Atkins' character was left out when Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, a regular from the start, opted to return.

Atkins appeared in the WB's Smart Guy as the older sister Tasha Yvette Henderson from 1997 to 1999. Dee Dee Thorne, her half-sister, appeared on UPN sitcom Half & Half from 2002 to 2006. She also appeared in films How High (2001), Deliver Us From Eva (2003), and Dance Flick (2009). Are We There Yet? appeared on TBS sitcom series Are We There Already? from 2010 to 2013. Terry Crews plays the opposite. Atkins appeared in the parody films A Haunted House (2013) and A Haunted House 2 (2014), which followed Marlon Wayans. In 2016, she appeared opposite Wayans in his NBC sitcom Marlon. In 2018, it was announced that it had been suspended after two seasons.

Atkins appeared in several scenes in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series Ambitions opposite Robin Givens in 2019.
