Fazira binti Wan Chek (born 9 February 1974), better known by her stage name Erra Fazira, is a Malaysian actress, singer, fashion model, television host, and film director, as well as a former beauty queen. She rose to prominence in the early 1990s after appearing in Sembilu ("Torn 2), Maria Mariana and Pasrah (Surrender).

In "Soal Hati ("About The Heart") (2001) and as "Nora," an older lady with a dark past in the film Hingga Hujung Nyawa ("Until the End of Life") (2006), she received critical acclaim and a Best Actress in a Leading Role award twice.

For her role in Somalnya Siapa, she received another three Malaysia Film Festival Best Actress award nomination.

Early life

Fazira was born in Sungai Choh, a tiny town in Rawang, Selangor's first child and the only daughter of Wan Chek and Azizah Zaik. Her parents were ethnic Malays. Fazira was a student at her high school and discovered a passion for acting, which she expressed an interest in early in life. She has also participated in numerous school clubs and societies, including Scouting, St John Ambulance of Malaysia, the English Language Society, and the Culture Club. She was also a keen sports student back in the days and has represented herself and her school in Netball. She said that the education and involvement she gained in those clubs played a crucial role in her later careers.

Fazira attended several prestigious schools, including SM Puteri Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

Personal life

On June 15, 2003, Erra Fazira married Malaysian singer and actress Yusry Abd Halim from KRU. Yusry Abd Halim, a Malaysian artiste, celebrated Yusry's 30th birthday. They officially divorced on June 16, 2006.

Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin, the former Suria's Chief Operating Officer, was married to Engku Emran Abidin from 2007 to 2014. They have a daughter named Engku Aleesya 2(9)/2(2). They divorced on January 18, 2014.

Career

Fazira, who had been persuaded by her aunt, joined the 1992 Malaysian beauty pageant at the age of 18. She competed against thirteen others and then took the title of Miss Malaysia World 1992. Miss Malaysia, Fazira, continued to compete in the Miss World 1992 pageant, representing Malaysia, which took place in Sun City, South Africa. During the preliminary competition, she earned her 15th position.

Fazira released her eponymous self-titled EP under Polygram Records in 1994, following the debut of her first feature film "Sembilu." She later recorded two albums with the label before deciding on Sony Music from Polygram. Aku dan Dia (1995) was the first studio album to feature the single "Yang Terindah Sementara" on its debut, then 2.5 Sayang followed "Persistence" in 1996 as single, with "Performance" following as single.

Fazira's fourth album and first with Sony Music were released three years ago. "Sandarkan," Siti Nurhaliza's song "Lakaran Kehidupan" (from Siti's seventh album, Safa) was chosen by TV3 as part of the network's 3D campaign. Both songs' music videos were shot in 3D, with TV3 viewers wearing 3D glasses when watching it.

Sampai Bertemu was released in 2002, marking her fifth album, and Kini Kembali (2004). She is one of the few Malaysian artists to perform "Suluhkan Sinar" ("Shine the Sun"). The song, which was produced by KRU and was released in January 2005, was specifically dedicated to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Fazira's seventh and last studio album, Ya Atau Tidak, was released in 2006.

In Sembilu, director Yusof Haslam invited Fazira to play as the lead role. On August 18, 1994, the film was first shown in theater. Awie, Erra's then-female partner, appeared in the film for the first time. Fazira reprised her role as Rosmawati Sofian in other film roles, including a sequel to Sembilu the following year.

Fazira appeared in four of Yusof's directed films, including the portrayal of Maria Zakaria in both Maria Mariana and Maria Mariana II. Fazira played Nurul Ain in the 2000 film Soal Hati. Fazira received the Malaysia Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her role in the film.

Fazira began working with many different producers for her films, including Ahmad Idham for Mr. Cinderella (2004) and Abdul Razak Mohaideen for Cinta Kolestrol (2003). In 2004, Fazira went on to act alongside her then-husband, Yusry bin Abdul Halim, in the 2004 film Hingga Hujung Nyawa, which was also directed by Abdul Razak. Fazira was given the Malaysia Film Festival Award for Best Actress once more for the role of Nora Halim in the film.

Fazira performed in a televisionmovie and hosted Fesyen Tempo in 2002. Gerak Khas, the actress of Malaysia's longest-running action drama series, has been playing the role of ASP Jeslina since 2018.
