Early career and What's Happening!

Thomas was born in Gary, Indiana, and began his career as a Broadway actor in Love for Love's 1974 revival and in The Member of the Wedding's 1975 revival. Glenn Close, a starred actress, appeared on both programs. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a film career, but only after that. He appeared on an episode of The Jeffersons in the fall of 1975. He learned of an audition for a sitcom loosely based on the 1975 film Cooley High on taping. Thomas volunteered, gained the lead role, and filmed the television pilot, but it failed. The scheme was quickly reworked into a more light-hearted representation of the source material, and it became known as Central Avenue before settling on the tag What's Happening!! Thomas was the only cast member of the pilot to be kept, and he played Roger "Raj" Thomas. The new "summer series" became a ratings hit, and it was expanded to a complete series from 1976 to 1979.

Thomas appeared on several film and television series, including Baretta, The Brady Bunch Hour, and Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby in the film A Piece of the Action. During the first season of What's Happening! Thomas was one of the final two actors to be considered for the lead role in Kunta Kinte's hit miniseries Roots, which later went to LeVar Burton. Thomas will continue to play Kailuba in the miniseries.

Ernest returned to action in the sequel What's Happening Now! after a six-year absence from television and film, he played Roger "Raj" Thomas. From 1985 to 1988, the show appeared in first-run syndication.

Since Thomas' cancellation, he has appeared on a number of popular TV dramas and sitcoms, including In the Heat of the Night (which co-starred Anne-Marie Johnson from What's Happening Now! 1) The Parenthood' Hood, Martin (which starred him in his film 'What's Happening Now!! ' Martin Lawrence, co-star Martin Lawrence, Soul Food, The Steve Harvey Show, The Steve Harvey Show, All About the Andersons, and more recently Just Jordan. He has appeared in a number of films, including a supporting role in Malcolm X and a cameo in Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star. Mr. Omar, the funeral director on the television sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, later appeared on the television sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. Ernest T "Bass" on the television show Are We There Yet? had an uncredited guest appearance on the television show Are We There Yet? It was titled "The Satchel Paige Episode" and involved him in a Flavor Flav style.

Thomas appeared in Rob Zombie's 2012 film The Lords of Salem, a rocker/horror film director. In 2016, he appeared in Earworm, a comedic body horror short film.

He has an eye disease called amblyopia.
