Bauersfeld was attracted to radio work at a very young age. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. His post-secondary education included time studying at Cooper Union in New York, and then at the University of California, Berkeley, where he concentrated on aesthetics and painting.

Career
When he first started working at Berkeley's Pacifica Radio station KPFA-FM in 1961, Bauersfeld was teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute. For 31 years, he was the head of KPFA's Drama and Literature Department. He dabbled in voiceover work in films and video games outside of radio.
When Ben Burtt, a sound designer, was working at Lucasfilm on a radio project, he was approached by Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt when he eventually was approached by Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Burtt asked him to read the Ackbar portion. He was shown a picture of Ackbar and immediately responded with the character's voice, according to Bauersfeld. Ackbar's lines, including the ostensible exclamation "It's a trap!" Bauersfeld was unable to keep an hour of time." He then spent an additional 30 minutes reading about Bib Fortuna's voice, who was Jabba the Hutt's majordomo. Both of his vocal roles were added to the final film of Return of the Jedi, but Bauersfeld was given no screen credit at the time.
He was the last one to read for Yoda, the role that eventually went to puppeteer Frank Oz.
In the 1979 Highbridge audio recordings of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, he also played several characters.
In many video games (including Star Wars: Battlefront: Admiral Ackbar), as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Bauersfeld reprised his role as Admiral Ackbar's voice (including Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron).
