Early life
Eric Anthony Roberts was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on April 18, 1956, to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, one-time actors and playwrights who met while touring with George Washington Slept Here for the armed forces. They co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in 1963 on Juniper Street in Midtown, Atlanta. In Decatur, Georgia, they operated a children's acting school. Roberts' mother became a church secretary and real estate agent, while his father, a vacuum cleaner, was a vacuum cleaner salesman. Julia Roberts (from whom he was disinherited until 2004) and Lisa Roberts Gillan are both actors.
In 1971, Roberts' parents applied for divorce, but it was not finalized until 1972. Eric stayed in Atlanta with his father Walter, who was estranged from his sisters. Walter died of cancer in March 1977. After the divorce, Lisa, Julia, and Betty moved to Smyrna, a suburb of Atlanta. Betty married Michael Motes in 1972 and had a daughter with him in 1976, Nancy Motes, who died February 9, 2014 of an apparent drug overdose at the age of 37. Motes were violent and often unemployed. Betty divorced Motes in 1983, citing cruelty and saying that marrying him was the biggest mistake of her life.

Personal life
Sandy Dennis, a 1989 film actress, claims she had been living in a seven-bedroom house she rented in Connecticut for five years. The friendship started many years after her 1974 time with boyfriend Gerry Mulligan, a jazz musician who had lived with Dennis in the same house (although some People magazine articles incorrectly stated it as Westport or Wilton).
He was in a debilitating car accident near their house in 1981, just months after Roberts first began living with Dennis. People magazine's review of his ordeal as "a month-long hospital stay" following a fatal car crash in 1981. 'I attempted to scale a tree in a CJ-5 [brand name for his Jeep],' he says. Eric hopped into her doorless Jeep for a ride with her German shepherd from Wilton, Conn, where his then girlfriend, actress Sandy Dennis, was 44 at the time. The dog leaned out too far. Roberts turned the steering wheel to gain a hold on the wayward pooch and ended up in a three-day coma. Dennis, an animal lover who loved a lot of dogs and cats, was relieved to learn that her German shepherd was not injured in the accident. Dennis' live-in relationship with Roberts lasted a few years after he recovered.
Emma Roberts, Roberts' daughter, is a result of Kelly Cunningham's live-in relationship; Emma was born on February 10, 1991. She became a famous actress after making her debut in the 2001 drama Blow at age ten. Eliza Garrett (daughter of actors David Rayfiel and Lila Garrett) married Roberts in 1992, following his encounter with Cunningham. Keaton Simons, his stepson, is a singer, and Morgan Simons, his stepdaughter, is a chef. Emma gave birth to her first child, a son named Rhodes, with actor Garrett Hedlund, making him a grandfather for the first time in December of 2020.
During a segment called "The Gossip Game" with National Enquirer Mike Walker, Roberts and his wife, actress Eliza Roberts, attended The Howard Stern Radio Show on January 12, 2001. Julia, his brother, had been estranged for many years, according to him. The source of the disarray was his drug use in the past and his alliance with his ex-girlfriend in securing his daughter's custody. He and his sister reconciled after he visited her in the hospital after she gave birth to twins in 2004, according to People magazine.
Roberts is a vegetarian and a promoter of animal rights.
