Erno Juhani "Emppu" Vuorinen (born 24 June 1978) is a Finnish guitarist best known for his work as a founding member and occasional songwriter of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He is the oldest of five children, with twin brother and three younger sisters. He began playing guitar as a private study at the age of 12, and since then has appeared in a number of bands, including Nightwish, Brother Firetribe, Barilari, Almah, and Altaria. Emppu is mainly a rhythm player, often supporting the keyboard or orchestral sections of Nightwish songs. * However, he also plays lead melodies and solos. * Vuorinen's solo performance methods include alternate picking, tapping, sliding, legato, and minor to extreme whammy bar use; he also uses sweep picking, but very rarely. His solos are more melodic than those of most metal bands, but he does shred on occasion (particularly in "Nightquest," "Reality," "Gethsemane" by Nightwish, and "Traitor" by Tarot, for which he performed a solo). Nightwish's first three albums feature more lead guitar pieces from Emppu than their later albums. * Since the introduction of Century Child, Vuorinen's studio guitars have been tuned in D tuning – before that, his guitars were tuned in standard. * He has two guitars on stage, one for each tuning. Vuorinen is also a creative force in Nightwish, having co-written songs with Tuomas Holopainen from Oceanborn to Dark Passion Play. * Vuorinen alone wrote the song Whoever Brings The Night on Dark Passion Play. Emppu recorded guitar parts for Almah, a Brazilian metal band, in order to assist his friend and vocalist Edu Falaschi (former singer of Angra). Emppu did not remain in the band due to his commitments to Nightwish. * He is also affiliated with Brother Firetribe, an AOR band that has released four albums worldwide: "Break Out"), "Heart Full Of Fire," "Diamond In The Firepit" and "Sunbound." When among band members or admirers, Vuorinen is often referred to as "the short one" or "the hobbit," because he stands at only 5'3" (162 cm) in height.
