Emmelie Charlotte-Victoria de Forest (born 28 February 1993) is a Danish singer and songwriter. In the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden, De Forest performed Denmark with the song "Only Teardrops."

Personal life

Ingvar de Forest (1938-2010) de Forest was born in Randers, Denmark, to a Danish mother, Marianna Birgitte Gudnitz, and a Swedish father, Ingvar de Forest. She grew up with her mother in Mariager, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden, following her parents' divorce when she was a child. She had previously stated that she was a grand granddaughter of Edward VII of the United Kingdom (and therefore a great-granddaughter of Victoria of the United Kingdom and Albert Consort). In its promotion of the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, Danmarks Radio used the tale of her ancestry in its promotion of the Ink Melodi Grand Prix, however researchers have discredited the assertion.

Emmelie De Forest Career

Music career

De Forest began singing at the age of nine and performed with her mother in the Steve Cameron Gospel Choir for many years. Fraser Neill, a Scottish folk musician, began appearing at music festivals and small venues from the age of 14. They produced Emmelié de Forest and Fraser Neill together, but only 100 copies were sold, according to Neill. When de Forest was 18 years old, she called an end to her time with Neill and moved to Copenhagen to study at the Complete Vocal Institute.

De Forest was one of ten acts in the 2013 Dansk Melodi Grand Prix for a chance to represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. Lise Cabble, Julia Fabrin Jakobsen, and Thomas Stengaard wrote "Only Teardrops" on January 26th, 2013 and was voted national champion.

Only Teardrops, her debut album, was released on May 6th, a week before her Eurovision debut. "Only Teardrops" has twelve songs on the album, as well as the original and symphonic versions.

De Forest, one of the ten finalists who qualified from the first semi-finals, reached the final of the Eurovision on May 14th. According to British bookmakers, de Forest was the odds on favourite to win the game. De Forest won the 2013 Eurovision final with a score of 281 points, 47 points more than second-place finisher Farid Mammadov of Azerbaijan.

On the 30th of November, she made her Eurovision winning entry at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Danish European Movement awarded de Forest the European of the Year award (Danish: Rets Europer Award) in December.

De Forest released a video on February 7, 2014, discussing her third single "Rainmaker" that detainied the song's meaning and previewing it. It was the official #JoinUs song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, and she performed the song live at the B&W Hallerne, Copenhagen. "It's about a tribe banding together to tell the rainmaker to make their land bloom again," de Forest said when speaking about the song. However, the rainmaker can be anything or everyone – it's about coming together and helping each other out. "I've been playing my music around Europe," she said after winning Eurovision last year, "I've been performing my music around Europe, released my debut album, and written a lot of new songs – to be honest, I'm living my dream." "Etopia is a product of the Inquiry.

De Forest said she was recording her second studio album, which was originally scheduled to be released in February 2015. "Rainmaker" was named Gold by de Forest on July 14th. De Forest revealed on Facebook on August 3rd that she would perform her first single from her yet unidentified album "Drunk Tonight" at Amsterdam Pride 2014. De Forest debuted the full cover and snippets of "Drunk Tonight" as well as a a music video preview on Instagram, as well as its music video preview. The single was later announced on August 18th, but the song's music video was released on August 25th. In interviews, De Forest, who appears in a bikini in the video, said that she wanted it to be both "elegant and sexy" at the same time.

She left her record label Universal Music Group in December 2015 and later joined Swedish record label Cosmos Music. De Forest was a songwriter on the song "Never Alone" performed by Anja Nissen in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2016. However, de Forest had performed the song several times before being eligible for the competition, but it was disqualifying. The European Broadcasting Union, which oversees the Eurovision Song Contest, ultimately accepted it. On February 13, the song advanced to the super final and ended in second place.

De Forest appeared in the British national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 as a writer for Lucie Jones' song "Never Give Up on You." The band went on to win the competition and then placed 15th at the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv. In November 2017, De Forest's first release since being dropped from Universal was released "Sanctuary." On February 9, 2018, her second studio album History was released. On October 8, 2021, De Forest's independent label Day In Day Out Records, a part of Cosmos Music, issued the single "Typical Love Song."
