Career

Insa's football career began with youth team Pinocho in Villa Urquiza, Argentina, before moving to Boca Juniors, Buenos Aires, Argentina. When he first caught the attention of scouts Frank McParland and Paddy Murphy from Liverpool, he did not break into the first team at La Bombonera. Many clubs were keen to sign him, a player who had never appeared for his then club, and Boca were also keen to gain a return from this young prodigy, which culminated in talks between Liverpool and Boca. On November 28, 2006, the defender agreed to an 18-month loan contract with the Merseyside club, beginning his loan repayment term in January.

Insa made his first-team debut against Portsmouth on April 28, 2007, but he made only one more league appearance this season. In the contract that culminated in Gabriel Paletta's transfer to Boca Juniors, his loan agreement was made permanent in August 2007.

Insa's first three appearances in the Premier Reserve League this season, but the following Liverpool youngsters had a blast. His performances enthused boss Rafael Bentez enough to promise him a new three-year contract at the club. In December 2008, Insua's first team played a string of games due to a major injury to Fábio Aurélio and also due to Andrea Dossena's presence. Insa's first match of their UEFA Champions League campaign, he found himself in Liverpool's first six Premier League games and the first tie of their UEFA Champions League campaign. In a Football League Cup match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on October 28, 2009, he scored his first goal for the club.

Despite being Liverpool's only senior left back, a fee was agreed for him to join Fiorentina in July 2010, but no deal was signed.

He joined Galatasaray on a one-year loan agreement with the option to transfer permanently next year on August 31, 2010 after the contract was terminated. He wore the number 6 shirt. After Galatasaray's Gheorghe Hagi said he did not want loan players in his squad, Insa had reportedly expressed his desire to play for Liverpool under new boss Kenny Dalglish, it was speculated that Insa will return to Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Following his loan period, Insa returned to Liverpool for pre-season training. Insua returned to Malaysia after being refused admission for visa reasons. He appeared in Liverpool's 6–3 victory over a Malaysian select team as a second-half replacement and scoring a goal.

Insa had signed for the club in a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, according to Sporting CP on August 27, 2011. He was given the number 48.

Ins' debut for Sporting in the UEFA Europa League on September 15, 2011, scoring the first goal in a 2–0 win over FC Zurich. In a 2–1 victory over SS Lazio on September 29, 2011, Insa scored his second goal. After receiving his second yellow card, he was dismissed later in the game.

Atlético Madrid announced on January 25 that they had reached an agreement with Sporting Clube de Portugal for the transfer of Insa, according to reports for €3.5 million.

In a season-long contract, Insa was loaned to fellow league team Rayo Vallecano on September 1st.

Insa mutually ended his Atlético employment and signed with VfB Stuttgart until 2018. Insa's contract with Stuttgart was extended until June 2020.

International career

The player earned success on the international stage, appearing in three games to finish as a qualifier for the FIFA U20 World Cup, conceding only 4 goals in the entire tournament and assisting the Argentina Under-20 team in the FIFA U20 World Cup final on July 22, 2007.

Diego Maradona, according to Liverpool manager Rafael Bentez, was monitoring Insa's progress and considering calling him up to Argentina for international service. Maradona eventually called him up on September 26, 2009, for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay, who were gaining their first win in a 2–1 victory over Peru.
