Tom Wilson flies in a tense confrontation with Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, resulting in Alex Ovechkin's overtime game-winner and snapping Capitals star Brett Wilson's goalless streak

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 22, 2023
Elvis Merzlikins, the Columbus Blue Jackets' goaltender, was furious to see Washington Capitals star Tom Wilson crumpled into his net. So the Latvian netminder decided to punch Wilson with his blocker and hold him down. Wilson fought his way out of the meshing and pushed Merzlikins back until the referees prevented the clash from progressing. Merzlikins was the only one convicted of the incident, a two-minute minor for roughing. With 2:18 left in overtime, the Capitals were effectively given a 4-on-3 advantage for the remainder of the extra frame. Then was the best cherry on top for Capitals fans.
