Mary Elle Fanning (born April 9, 1998) is an American actress and model.
She made her film debut in the drama film I Am Sam (2001), as the younger sister of actress Dakota Fanning.
She appeared in a number of films including Because of Winn-Dixie (2005), Babel (2006), Phoebe in Wonderland (2008), and Somewhere (2010). Fanning's breakthrough came in 2011 with her role in J. Early life
Fanning was born in Conyers, Georgia, to Heather Joy (née Arrington), who played college tennis, and Steven J. Fanning, who played minor league baseball for teams affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Rick Arrington, an American football player, was her maternal grandmother, and Jill Arrington, an ESPN reporter, is her aunt. William Farrar, a gentleman farmer, is ranked among the Arrington family's most prominent ancestors. Dakota Fanning, who is also an actor, is Fanning's younger sister. Both were raised in the Southern Baptist denomination.
Career
Fanning began acting before turning three years old. In the miniseries Takingn and the film I Am Sam, she began her acting career by playing the younger sister Dakota's roles. Fanning appeared in the comedy Daddy Day Care in 2002, at the age of four. In the decision to cast Ruth in The Door in the Floor (2004) opposite Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger, there was anecdotal evidence of her growing abilities. The film's designers had intended to bring identical twins for the intense shooting schedule, but they were so impressed with Fanning that they cut them off. Fanning appeared in Because of Winn-Dixie in the small role of Sweetie Pie Thomas in 2003.
