Life and career
Coltrane was born in Austin, Texas, to Genevieve (née Kinney), an equine-assisted therapist for autistic people, and Bruce Salmon, a guitarist. Their parents divorced when they were nine years old, and their mother later remarried. Evelyn, Coltrane's half-sister, was born when the two were eleven years old.
Coltrane was cast by filmmaker Richard Linklater to play a title character from the film Boyhood in 2001, but the actors weren't around or old; Linklater wanted to make an unprecedented film that would feature a boy's coming of age. Coltrane and other members of the cast were filming intermittently for many days between May 2002 and August 2013, around the time they turned 19; there were 45 days of filming total. They appeared in many other films during Coltrane's youth, including a small role in Linklater's 2006 film Fast Food Country.
Coltrane appeared in Barry, the Barack Obama drama film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. They co-starred Emma Watson in James Ponsoldt's film adaptation of Dave Eggers' novel The Circle (2017), which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival the following year.
