Early life
Scanlen was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and she has a fraternal twin sister named Annabel. She started playing piano when she was 7 years old but stopped playing until she was thirteen years old. She began practising the piano again in preparation for her role as Beth March in the 2019 film version of Little Women.
Career
Scanlen appeared in Tabitha Ford's recurring role on television soap opera Home and Away while in high school. In the short film Grace, Scanlen played the titular character. She then received praise for her portrayal of Amma Crellin in the HBO psychological thriller miniseries Sharp Objects, in which she co-star Amy Adams.
Scanlen made her professional debut in Lord of the Flies' 2019 production, directed by Kip Williams. Eric was the play's lead actress.
