Early life
In 1952, Tahari was born as the middle son of an Iranian-Jewish couple. He has four sisters (Avraham and Yosi), as well as two brothers (Avraham and Yosi). The family immigrated from Iran to Israel, where they lived in a ma'abara transit camp in Mevasseret Zion. The family returned to Iran in 1953-1957, returning later to Israel. Tahari was sent to a boarding school ("Sde Hemed") in Rishon LeZion after his parents divorced and his father remarried, and later moved to Tel Aviv ("Maon Hayeled"). In Kvutzat Schiller and an Israeli Air Force boarding school in Haifa, the following years were spent.
Elie Tahari immigrated to the United States in 1971 with less than $100. After popularizing the iconic tube top in 1973, working as an electrician at a clothing store in New York City's Garment District, he began designing his own clothing collection. Tahari, his namesake brand, was established in 1974 with a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City.
Career
Elie Tahari produced dance dresses and blouses in 1977, debuting his first fashion exhibition at Studio 54 in New York City, inspired by 1970s disco culture.
Tahari returned to the tailored suit in the 1980s, with more office-centric designs as women entered the workforce and the ranks of the executive class. In 1994, he was admitted to the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 1997, he collaborated with Andrew Rosen to create Theory, the ready-to-wear brand.
The 2000s saw a brand makeover his male ready-to-wear, accessories, jewelry, footwear, and home products. Elie Tahari appeared on Lifetime as a guest judge on the America television series Project Runway All Stars. In 2014, he worked with Kohl's DesigNation and launched ET Sport in 2015.
