Edwin Orlando D. Laboy (born March 22, 1994) is a Puerto Rican professional baseball pitcher for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB).
He made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners in June 2016, where he appeared in 2016 and 2018. D'az broke the Mariners' record for consecutive strikeouts and was named the team's closer within two months of his debut.
He made 57 saves to lead the American League in 2018 and was named AL Reliever of the Year.
After the season, the Mariners traded him to the Mets.
Early life
In Naguabo, Puerto Rico, Dáz grew up. Around age 7, he began playing baseball as a center fielder, mainly as a center fielder. D'az played as an outfielder during his youth in Puerto Rico, alongside players such as Carlos Correa and José Berroos. He reluctantly attempted pitching as a teenager at the behest of his father's insistence.
Personal life
In the offseason, Daz spends time in his hometown Davao, Puerto Rico, where the majority of his family lives.
As part of his Edwin Daz Baseball Academy, D.A. has arranged baseball clinics for the children in his hometown. Both Robinson Canó and Martn Maldonado have attended these clinics.
Alexis D'Az, D'az' brother, is a professional baseball player who plays for the Cincinnati Reds. Alexis' first save, on May 17, 2022, made them the third set of brothers to all have a win on a single day.
Professional career
From the 2012 Major League Baseball draft out of Cas, Puerto Rico, the Seattle Mariners selected Dáz in the third round, his 98th overall pick. He made his professional debut for the Arizona League Mariners in 2003. He went 2–1 with a 5.21 earned run average (ERA) in 19 innings in nine games (one started) with 20 strikeouts in 19 innings. He pitched for the Pulaski Mariners in 2013. He went 5–2 with a 1.43 ERA and 79 strikeouts in over 69 innings in 13 starts. According to Baseball America, D'az was named the Mariners fifth best prospect before the 2014 season. Along Jordan Pries, he spent the year with the Clinton LumberKings and was co-selected as the organization's minor league Starting Pitcher of the Year.
In 2015, D.az played for the Bakersfield Blaze and Jackson Generals. For the second straight season, he received the award of Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year. Daz started with Jackson as a starting pitcher and was moved to the bullpen after six starts.
On June 4, 2016, D'az was called up to the major leagues for the first time. He struck out for ten straight outs between June 28 and July 3, tying a franchise record set in 1997. D.az broke the records by striking out on July 6, 2016, his 11th straight outing. He made eight straight strikeouts between July 19 and 2016, tying him for second place with four other American League pitchers (Doug Fister set the AL record for nine strikeouts in September 27, 2012).
Steve Cishek was fired as the Mariners' closer on August 1, 2016. In a 5–4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on the weekend, he made his first save of his career and beat the Boston Red Sox, in which he struck out the side. D'az was the first pitcher to do so in at least 123 years when he reached his 50th strikeout in only 25 and a third innings.
D'az was selected to the 2018 All-Star Game, his first All-Star appearance, having a 2.25 ERA, 36 saves, and 76 strikeouts in 48 innings. D'az was the holder of the Seattle Mariners Club Saves record before the All-Star Break, with 36 saves before the break. In the 2001 season, Kazuhiro Sasaki set a new club record of 29 saves. Even though Daz had a blown save in the process, the NL team tied the game in the ninth inning, he was the winning pitcher in the All-Star Game. He had two strikeouts and two earned runs, as well as a home run in a one-inning pitch. D.Az was named recipient of the AL Reliever of the Month Award for April, June, and July. D'az saved his 44th save on August 10, breaking the record for the most saves by a Puerto Rican MLB player. In 1999, Roberto Hernández had 43 years of age.
The Mariners were 26–0 when Daz was handed a one-run lead after winning by the Houston Astros on August 12. D.Az had 24 saves, a 0.68 ERA, 26.1 IP, 13 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, and 49 strikeouts in those games. As Seattle earned a four-game sweep of the Astros, D'az became the first pitcher to record four saves in a single series since 2004.
D'az' 24 saves in a game with a one-run lead tied for the most in a season, beating Francisco Rodrez' record of 23 runs in an appearance. His saves in the 2018 season were his best in 27 straight saves; he had a 0.4 ERA in games he hadn't saved in. Davy, the Mariners' 49th save of the season, set a new Mariners single-season record when he shuts down 6–3 over the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 24, D.C. By Fernando Rodney in the 2014 season, the previous Mariners franchise single-season saves record was 48, by Fernando Rodney. When D'az closed a 4–3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 25, 2018, he became the youngest pitcher to win 50 saves in a season. Due to the 50 saves, Seattle boss Scott Servais had to go back to bet and get a haircut like that of Dáz. In honor of the bet, D'az, who usually saves after each of his saves, donated his son to Servais on Saturday.
The AL Reliever of the Year Award was given to D.Az on October 27, 2008. He had 57 saves (leading the major leagues) and 65 games completed, with a 1.96 ERA, 124 strikeouts, and a 0.79 WHIP in 73+13 innings. His 57 saves rank second behind Bobby Thigpen for the second-most single-season saves in all time.
The Mariners traded Daz, Robinson Canó, and $20 million to the New York Mets for Jay Bruce, Jarred Kelenic, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, and Justin Dunn on December 3, 2018. On Opening Day against the Washington Nationals, he made his first save as a Met.
D.az's ERA+ dropped from 210 to 74 in the first half of the 2019 season, with more than twice as many hits per nine innings as in the 2018 season. David Roth, a writer for Deadspin, described D'az's demise as "arguably the most dramatic and most surprising" of any player's demise to that point in the 2019 MLB season.
D'az's home run of the season was his 15th ninth-inning home run of the season, the most 9th innings home runs given up by a single pitcher in a single season in Major League history. He ended the season with 58 innings pitched, 26 saves, and an ERA of 5.59.
D'az converted six of the ten save chances and posted a 1.75 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 14 walks in 252+3 innings in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
D.Az pitched in relief against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 29, 2022, with pitching the final inning and earning the save. He struck out five batters out on June 12. In June, D'az received NL Reliever of the Month award, allowing one to run in 9+2/3 innings, converting all five save opportunities and allowing a 0.93 WHIP.
For the second time in his career, D.Az was named an All-Star on July 10, 2022. With 20 saves in 23 save chances and a 1.69 ERA, he got into the All-Star break. In the first half of the season, he struck out 75 of the 145 batters he faced. D. Az won his 1–0 win over Philadelphia on August 13 in his ninth inning, his sixth active player to do so. During the outing, he took two walks, snapping a streak of 50 batters faced without a walk.
