Edwin Carewe (March 3, 1883 – January 22, 1940) was a Native American motion picture designer, actor, and screenwriter.
Jay John Fox was born in Gainesville, Texas, and he was named after him.
Frank Fox, his father, was white, and Sallie (Priddy) Fox, his mother, was Chickasaw.
F. Finis and Wallace Carewe, Edwin's two brothers, were among the Chickasaw Nation's registered members.
He was certainly one of the most prolific of Native American directors of feature films in Hollywood history.
Career
Carewe moved to New York City in 1910, where he became a member of the Dearborn Stock Company after brief studies at the Universities of Texas and Missouri, as well as a period of time with regional theatre companies. Despite the fact that Jay Fox was his first name, Carewe selected Edwin (from stage actor Edwin Booth) and Carewe from a character he was playing.
Carewe performed as an actor before he began working for Lubin studios. Later, he produced films for MGM, First National, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and United Artists. During his career, he introduced early screen exposure to many actors, including Dolores del Ro, Warner Baxter, Francis X. Bushman and Gary Cooper. He produced 58 films, including the internationally acclaimed 1928 version of Ramona starring Dolores del Ro and Warner Baxter, which was discovered and restored by the Library of Congress and had its world premiere at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2014.
According to the 1907 Chickasaw Rolls, Carewe and his two brothers, Wallace Fox (a producer/producer) and Finis Fox (a scenario writer), were all registered Chickasaw.
Evangeline, 1929, was another of Carewe's best films, as well as Del Ro, and written by his brother Finis Fox. Evangeline was based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem and received acclaim for its superb lighting and camera work.
Despite that Carewe directed and produced a number of influential and financially successful films during the silent period, he was not quite ready to make the leap from silent to sound. He made his last film Are We Civilized after reverting to sound remakes of his earlier films and later to low-budget and religious films. In 1934, a railway in 1934 was built.
Carewe was married three times, twice to actress Mary Akin. Violette (who became an actress) and Mary Jane, his first wife (married January 9, 1909 in Toronto, Ontario), were two children of his first marriage, John Jane Croft (who became a child actor) and Mary Jane. Sally Ann and William were born in Edwin Gilbert, who died in his first marriage to Mary Akin. Carol Lee was the only child of his second marriage to Akin.
