Edie McClurg (born July 23, 1945) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, singer, and voice actor.

She has appeared in nearly 90 films and 55 television episodes, often portraying characters with a cheery Midwestern accent.

Early life and education

McClurg was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, to Mac, a mailman, and Irene McClurg, an FAA secretary. She has an older brother, Bob, who is also an actor. McClurg received her degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in the mid-1960s, where she also taught radio for eight years. She obtained a master's degree from Syracuse University.

McClurg returned to the entertainment industry as a DJ, newswoman, and producer for the NPR affiliate KCUR-FM. In Conversation 26 of NPR's national broadcast of the Nixon Tape transcripts, she portrayed John Ehrlichman. In 2017, Edie was granted an honorary doctorate at this university.

Personal Life

TMZ announced that McClurg's family and friends filed court papers requesting a conservatorship to handle her affairs in 2019. According to TMZ, cognitive tests have shown that McClurg is unable to live alone without help and is "particularly vulnerable to undue influence given her poor judgment and apparent dementia."

A man who had been friended and moved in with McClurg, became her caregiver, with the court's permission, was abusing McClurg in August 2022. According to the papers, she was sexually assaulted by her caregiver, and a police report was not submitted with the Los Angeles Police Department. They also suspect the guy attempted to take her from the state in order to marry her. An order of protection was granted by the conservatorship's judge, with further hearings set for September 2022.

Helen Shyres appeared in Brian De Palma's 1976 horror film Carrie starring Sissy Spacek, making his onscreen debut. She appeared on the Tony Orlando and Dawn variety show (1976-1977), and then as a cast member of The Kallikaks and The Richard Pryor Exhibition.

She moved to Los Angeles and joined the Groundlings troupe after being a member of San Francisco's improv comedy the Pitcshel Players.
