Eddie Graham Life

Edward F. Gossett (January 15, 1930 – January 21, 1985), also known as Eddie Graham, was an American professional wrestler.

In the 1970s, he served as the promoter and booker for Championship Wrestling from Florida and President of the NWA.

Early life

Edward Gossett was born in Dayton, Tennessee, on January 15, 1930, he was blind in one eye. When he was in Chattanooga at the age of 12, he lived in a crowded household and sold newspapers and eggs to make a living. Newsboys were given a YMCA gym membership, enabling him to get physical exercise.

Personal life

Graham was lacing his boots in the locker room when a 75-lb steel window fell on his head, detaching both of his retinas and causing him an injury that required three hundred stitches. He was fined $23,000 by the Florida Legislature for the shooting. Graham's eyesight was poor because of blade jobs, and because he needed surgery to fix the issue and couldn't afford the funds, he had some wrestlers tamper with the window in order to pass it off as though it was the responsibility of the building, according to Jim Wilson in his book Chokehold. Eyewitness witnesses contradict this allegation. In addition, "blading" does not cause eye damage, according to noted optometrist Dr. Robert W. McCullough and other eye doctors. Graham was unable to wrestle for fifteen months due to the injury.

As the head of the Florida Boys and Girls Ranch Villa, Graham contributed to a number of charitable causes. Graham, C.P., in 1957. Luttrall, a "cowboy," and Hillsborough Sheriff Ed Blackburn began efforts to establish the company. Graham donated funds from every Championship Wrestling match from Florida's to the Villa, totaling $120,000, as well as supporting high school and college level amateur wrestling tournaments.

Eddie Graham Career

Professional wrestling career

After being introduced by Clarence "Cowboy" Luttrall, Gossett began wrestling in Texas at the age of 17. He was occasionally referred to as the brother of "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers under the name Rip Rogers. In May 1958 in Texas, he lost a losing-leaves-town match to Pepper Gomez.

In June 1958, Eddie Graham, who was billed as the "brother" of Dr. Jerry Graham and "Crazy" Luke Graham, changed his ring name, joining the group of brothers (Superstar Billy Graham would later join the group of brothers). On the east coast of the United States, Jerry and Eddie were a very fruitful villainous tag team. They had popular rivalries with squads such as the Fabulous Kangaroos, the Bastien Brothers, Mark Lewin and Don Curtis, Antonino Rocca, and Miguel Pérez. In Capitol Wrestling (the forerunner of World Wrestling Entertainment) four times, they tied forerunners, Lewin and Curtis, and then against Red and Lou Bastien.

Eddie left the team in 1960 and moved to the National Wrestling Alliance's territory in Florida to wrestle. He was bitter with Professor Boris Malenko while he was here in 1966. Eddie took over booking and promoting Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1971. Mike Graham, his son, competed in tag team competitions until 1977, when he retired from the sport due to health problems. Graham returned to the ring a year later. He defeated Killer Khan by pinfall in 1979, and his son Mike and Ray Stevens' participation on Khan's behalf was combated by his son Mike and Ray Stevens. Graham's last recorded match was against Terry Funk on March 3, 1982, which was declared a draw.

He served as President of the NWA from 1976 to 1978, owing in large part to Gordon Solie and Dusty Rhodes. Graham was unable to serve as President of Alberta, 1978 and 1978, due to serious health problems he suffered from, and he was forced to resign as a result.
