Edward Vincent Bracken (February 7, 1915-November 14, 2002) was an American actor.

Bracken made a name for himself in the films Hail the Conquering Hero and Morgan's Creek, both of which have been preserved by the National Film Registry, with lead roles in Hail the Conquering Hero and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.

He had success on Broadway as a result of his appearances in musicals such as Too Many Girls (1939). Bracken's later film appearances include National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), Oscar (1991), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and Rookie of the Year (1993).

Life and career

Edward Vincent Bracken was born in Astoria, Queens, New York, on February 7, 1915, the son of Joseph L. and Catherine Bracken. Bracken appeared in vaindeville at the age of nine and rose to prominence in the Broadway film adaptation of 1940. He had appeared in a short film called The Kiddie Troupers (one of many Our Gang-like films) before that, but this was his big break. Bracken's 1936 appearance in the Joseph Viertel's So Proudly We Hail won on Broadway. The military drama, co-starring Richard Cromwell, attracted a lot of attention, but it was eventually dismissed after 14 performances at the 46th Street Theatre.

In two of his best-loved films, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, opposite Betty Hutton, and Hail the Conquering Hero, director Preston Sturges cast Bracken in two of his best-loved films in the 1940s. Eddie Bracken, a household name during World War II, was owing to the success of these films. He appeared on numerous radio broadcasts and hosted The Eddie Bracken Show, his own show.

Bracken left Hollywood in 1953. Hello, Dolly! He appeared on Broadway in Shinbone Alley; The Odd Couple; and Sugar Babies. At the age of 77, his last appearance on Broadway was in the musical Dreamtime directed by David Niles at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Bracken's extensive television appearances from 1952 to 2000 included an episode of The Golden Girls as Rose Nylund's ex-childhood boyfriend from St. Olaf, as well as an episode of Tales from the Darkside portraying a stubborn old man who refuses to believe that he has died. Mr. Roy Walley, the beloved Walley World theme park founder, has returned to perform character roles, including Mr. Roy Walley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1993) and Duncan's Toy Chest toy store owner Mr. Duncan in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Bracken spent his time with Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, appearing in scores of productions from the 1980s to the early 2000s. In which he played Captain Andy Hawkes, they made one of the best shows in history. This film first appeared on PBS in 1990. He appeared in Patrick Read Johnson's 1994 film Baby's Day Out as one of the veterans in the old soldier's house.

Bracken appeared in films with two actors who later became US Presidents: Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. In 1949, he co-starred in The Girl from Jones Beach with Reagan, and in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992.

Bracken died in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, of complications from an undisclosed surgery at the age of 87. Connie Nickerson, a former actor, died in August 2002, just three months before his husband's death. In 1938, he met Connie when they worked together in a road company of the Broadway play What a Life. Eddie and Connie had five children together: two sons (Michael and David) and three daughters (Judy, Carolyn, and Susan).

Bracken has two actors on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 1651 Vine Street and 6751 Hollywood Boulevard respectively, for his contributions to radio and television.
