Edward John China (born 9 May 1971) is an English television presenter, mechanic, and entrepreneur best known for his role as host and mechanic on Discovery Channel's television show Wheeler Dealers.

He has appeared on Top Gear, Auto Trader, Scrapheap Challenge, and Fifth Gear.

Edd China's Garage Revival is China's own YouTube series.

Early life

From an early age, China began an obsession with cars and mechanics. He studied at King Edward's School, Witley, Surrey, and holds a degree in engineering product design from London South Bank University. The Casual Lofa (driving sofa), China's first major project of note, was created while at university. It was designed to raise funds for a Raleigh International Expedition to Belize.

Television career

Following the success of his creation of the Casual Lofa, China's first television work was as a special effects technician for Father Ted in 1994. On Top Gear Live in 1998, China appeared as a guest, driving the Casual Lofa at the Silverstone 'Live Arena.'

On Jeremy Clarkson's DVD The Most Outrageous Jeremy Clarkson Video In The World was also included in this year, China and the Casual Lofa. The Casual Lofa was racing at the Thruxton Circuit in a manner similar to Wacky Races, for the first time ever. Over the years, China has appeared on Channel 4's The Big Breakfast three times, promoting the Casual Lofa, Bog Standard, and Street Sleeper.

In an episode involving driving beds and sofa cars, China was a participant on Scrapheap Challenge (formerly known as Junkyard Wars in the United States). China was featured in an episode of the television show This Is Your Life starring Madness frontman Suggs in the same year. Michael Aspel, the host of China's old haunts, was escorted around old haunts, and Aspel was delivered to the Casual Lofa television studios.

A year later, China was a resident designer on BBC's "Build a Bond Car On A Budget," where he displayed a Rover 800 (purchased for £200) that had been upgraded with budget Bond esque accessories, such as an ejection seat for less than £100.

On BBC's Ready Steady Cook's Kids in Need Special, China was a celebrity guest on a Children in Need Special in 2005. In addition, Brewer and he coproduced the short-lived Auto Trader television series. Discovery Channel's Discovery Channel broadcast the series.

On The Culture Show in 2007, China was a visitor to Edinburgh and witnessed Arthur Smith and several other artists.

He, together with Penny Mallory, Tony Mason, and Alex Riley, co-founded Classic Car Club for Discovery Channel in 2005.

Discovery Channel and television presenter Mike Brewer were partnered with China in 2003 to produce a new vehicle show called Wheeler Dealers. It was both China's and Brewer's most popular television show to date, and the pair produced the series together for 13 years from 2003 to 2017. On March 21, 2017, China announced on his YouTube channel that he was leaving Wheeler Dealers due to internal discussions over the program's direction. China's six days later, in another video, Brewer explained how he, his wife, and his daughter were receiving significant internet harassment, including death threats, as a result of China's departure from the show.

Business career

Following the success of his creations as a special effects technician on Father Ted's comedy television show, China founded Cummfy Banana Limited in March 1999 as an outlet for his ardent designs. On ITV's Pulling Power, China was interviewed about Cummfy Banana's cars in 2001. He appeared on ITV's This Morning in 2006 about his Cummfy Banana cars.

China formed Grease Junkie Limited (whose website sells Wheeler Dealers and Grease Junkie items) in 2009 and became the managing director. Grease Junkie, China's third-owned MOT and servicing garage in Bracknell, Berkshire, which was voluntarily liquidated in August 2016.
