Early life
Taylor was born in Richmond, Virginia, on February 26, 1907, as the middle child of five Minnie and Walter C. Taylor, Sr.'s middle child. He had two older sisters, Minnie Marg[aret] and Maud, a younger brother named George, as well as a little sister, Edna Fay, according to the 1920 federal census. Around 1912, the family moved to Augusta, Georgia, where Walter was five years old, and lived there until he was 13. Taylor's mother was a Pennsylvania native, and his father, who worked in Augusta at that time as a cotton broker, was from North Carolina. Walter, Jr., Jr., got his lifelong nickname when his classmates began referring to him "W" and then narrowed it to "Dub."
