Early life
De Matteo was born in Whitestone, Queens, New York City, on January 19, 1972. Donna's mother, Donna, is a playwright and playwriting instructor who has been teaching at HB Studio, and Albert, her father, was a furniture manufacturer who was both owner and CEO of Avery Boardman and Carlyle. She is of Italian descent and grew up in a Catholic family.
De Matteo obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film production from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, aspiring to be a film director after graduating from Loyola School. She has also studied acting at the HB Studio.
Personal life
De Matteo, a teen girlfriend of Michael Sportes, opened Filth Mart, an East Village clothing store in 1997. In 2004, they closed the store.
In 2001, De Matteo introduced Shooter Jennings, a jazz musician. They became engaged on June 11, 2009, when Jennings suggested onstage at the Stanley Theater in Utica, New York. They have two children together, with daughter Alabama Gypsyrose Jennings (born November 28, 2007) and son Waylon Albert "Blackjack" Jennings (born April 2011). Career
De Matteo's role in The Sopranos was one of her earliest appearances, and she played a key role in her debut. Swordfish, Deuces Wild, The Perfect You, Prey for Rock & Roll's 2004 remake of John Carpenter's 1976 action film Assault on Precinct 13 has appeared in many films, including Swordfish, Deuces Wild, The Perfect You, Prey for Rock & Roll and the 2005 remake of Assault on Precinct 13. She appeared in Abel Ferrara's R Xmas, garnering several rave reviews.
De Matteo received an Emmy Award for her role as Adriana on The Sopranos (season 5) in 2004 and was nominated for a Golden Globe the same year in the same role.
