Early life
Savant was born and raised in Burbank, California. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles.
Personal life
He married Laura Leighton, a Melrose Place co-star, in May 1998. Jack (born October 10, 2000) and Lucy (born June 9, 2005). Savant also has two children from Leighton's previous marriage, Arianna (born January 17, 1992) and Madeline (born July 20, 1993).
Career
Savant debuted in teen comedy films Secret Admirer and Teen Wolf in 1985, and the following year appeared in horror film Trick or Treat. He appeared in numerous television prime time soap operas Knots Landing from 1986 to 1987 as a younger version of Mac McKenzie (played by Kevin Dobson). He was paired with Nicollette Sheridan, a younger version of Anne Matheson's role portrayed by Michelle Phillips, who appeared in Desperate Housewives. He co-starred in the erotic thriller film Masquerade with Rob Lowe and Kim Cattrall in 1988.
Savant appeared in the Fox prime time soap opera Melrose Place from 1992 to 1997, being one of the first mainstream openly gay characters on television. However, his presence was greatly restricted by the network, especially a kiss between Matt and guest star Ty Miller during the season two finale, which was cut out at the last minute by FOX. After five seasons, Savant's character was killed off-screen in a car accident a year later. In 1998, he appeared in Godzilla's epic film Sgt. O'Neal and the following years appeared on The Outer Limits, Profiler, Firefly, JAG, Nip/Tuck, NYPD Blue, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. On the 24th of August, he had a four-episode arc.
In 2004, Savant appeared in the ABC comedy-drama series Desperate Housewives as Tom Scavo. Tom appeared in Season 1 as a regular in the first season (2004-05), but in Season 2, he was first recognized as a series regular. He was out of town on business every day, married to Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman). Savant's popularity and his person led to his employment as a series regular from season two to begin, and Tom and Lynette were portrayed as the most stable pair on the series. Savant appeared in a number of shows, including Hot in Cleveland, Criminal Minds, 9-1-1, and NCIS, until the series ended in 2012.
