Dorian Harewood (born August 6, 1950) is an American actor and voice-over artist.

Early years

Harewood, the son of Emerson Macaulay and Estelle Olivia Harewood, was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 6, 1950. His father was both a high school teacher and a post office clerk. Emerson M. Harewood Jr., Theolanda Harewood, Philip B. Harewood, Floranne E. Dunford, and Lawanda G. Pitts are five siblings. In 1972, he graduated from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

Personal life

Nancy Ann McCurry, a Harewood married actress, married him on February 14, 1979. Olivia Ruth and John Dorian are the couple's two children.

Career

Harewood got his start in musical theater. He appeared in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Streamers, and The Mighty Gents on Broadway. Harewood received a Theatre World Award for his role in Don't Call Back. When Harewood began starring in a stage performance with Bette Davis, she encouraged Harewood to continue acting in dramatic roles and praises her mentor. He made his film debut in Foster and Laurie (1975).

In the ABC miniseries Roots: The Next Generations, Harewood portrayed Simon Haley (father of author Alex Haley). He is best known for his appearance in The Jesse Owens Novel and as Paul Strobber in the ABC Television series Strike Force (starring Robert Stack). He appeared on Trauma Center alongside Wendie Malick and Lou Ferrigno, was on China beach regularly, and he was Hank Mitchell in Rosie O'Neill's Trials.

Gray Lady Down (1978), action drama Tank (1984), and sci-fi film Solar Crisis (1990) were among his film credits. Timothy Hutton (Sean Penn)'s alcoholic coworker in The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), appearing as a footballer in Against All Odds (1984). In Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987), Harewood then portrayed a war soldier. In 2003, he appeared in two films starring Mackie Whitaker, and Teddy Howard in Gothika.

On the NBC drama series I'll Fly Away, Clarence "Cool Papa" Charleston was given the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Mini-Series, or Television Movie in 1994. In Hank Aaron's Chasing a Dream, narrating the television film, the following year, Harewood voiced Hank Aaron in Hank Aaron's Chasing a Dream. The special received an Emmy Award nomination.

He appeared as Rev. Julian Wilkes in the NBC (later syndicated) TV series Viper and had a recurring role as Rev. Morgan Hamilton in 7th Heaven. In the Showtime series The Hoop Life, Harewood appeared as Eliot Pierce. Harewood received his second NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2000. He has dabbled in music, performing the national anthem at the 1994 Orange Bowl and releasing a collection called Love Will Stop Calling in 1988.

Harewood, a voice actor, began appearing in animations in the 1980s. In the California Raisin Show, he voiced A.C. Riley in Batman: The Animated Series, portrayed Tombstone in Spider-Man and voiced Michael Jordan in The Animated Series, and voiced Michael Jordan in the Saturday morning cartoon ProStars. Jim Tate, who appeared in Batman Beyond, later returned to the Batman franchise as Jim Tate. Harewood would play Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles if James Avery was unavailable. In Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, Harewood portrayed Rhodey Rhodes / War Machine. Modo in Biker Mice from Mars (1993-96), a role in which he reprised in the same name revival (2006–2008).

Harewood has only expressed disappointment with one film and television production: Beulah Land, where he portrayed an overseer named Floyd. He was dissatisfied with the film's script and said he was "unhappy" and "embarrassed" with the final product. Harewood has stated that he would only accept roles that he feels will have positive images of African-Americans.
