He played college football at Ole Miss, and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
High school career
Moncrief, a native of Raleigh, Mississippi, attended Raleigh High School. As a senior, he caught 441 yards and 9 touchdowns, while still passing for 365 yards with 2 touchdowns and rushing 12 times for 144 yards. He also had two punts for touchdowns. He had 48 tackles, four for injury, and four interceptions on defense.
Moncrief played in track and field for the Lions, where he was one of the state's top performers in the long jump. He was a two-time 3A state champion in the long jump event, with a personal record of 7.76 meters (25-1.5).

College career
Moncrief attended the University of Mississippi from 2011 to 2013. He had 156 receptions for 2,371 yards and 20 touchdowns during his collegiate career.

Professional career
By the Indianapolis Colts on May 9, 2014, Moncrief was drafted in the third round, with the 90th overall pick. The Colts officially signed him to his rookie deal on May 30. Moncrief scored his first NFL touchdown on a pass from quarterback Andrew Luck on October 26, 2014, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Colts defeated the Washington Redskins 49–27 after Moncrief had 3 receptions for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns in week 13. He had 32 receptions for 444 yards and 3 touchdowns in his rookie season.
He made a career-high 64 receptions for 733 yards and six touchdowns in 2015. Moncrief missed six games due to a shoulder sprain and another with a hamstring injury, but he still managed to score seven touchdowns. He had a career-low 26 catches in 2017 due to unforeseen injuries as well as Luck's absence from the entire season.
Moncrief signed a one-year, $9.6 million completely guaranteed contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 15, 2018. Moncrief had five receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown in Week 4, defeating the New York Jets. He finished the season with 48 receptions for 668 yards and three touchdowns.
Moncrief and the Pittsburgh Steelers announced on March 14, 2019, that they had signed a two-year contract. In Week 1 against the New England Patriots, Moncrief made his Steelers debut against the New England Patriots. Moncrief was unable to recover 3 passes for 7 yards in the 33–3 loss. After collecting only four catches for 18 yards in five games, he was released on November 2, 2019.

The New England Patriots signed Moncrief to their practice squad on November 4, 2020. Moncrief returned a 53-yard kick against the Cardinals. He was admitted to the active roster on December 5, 2020.
